TikTok users are being urged to check their two-pence pieces after it emerged that a rare error coin could be worth around £1,000.

The coins were struck in 1983 with the old inscription 'New Pence', despite the design changing from 'New Pence' to 'Two Pence' in 1982.

It's not known exactly how many of these error coins were struck, but in 1983 2p coins were only struck for commemorative sets and not issued for circulation.

These coins were initially part of exclusive souvenir sets that never circulated, reports the Mirror.

However, if these sets were opened and the coins spent, there's a slim chance you might uncover one in your loose change.

One TikTok user, known as @CoinCollectingWizard, regularly shares his tips on how to spot rare coins and recently highlighted the valuable 2p piece.

In his video, operating a coin machine, he says: "Searching for the rare New Pence Two Pence coin because this is what we do.

"This is a 2p coin and after the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins. These coins were actually struck with the old inscription New Pence.

"While it's not known exactly how many of these error coins were struck, in 1983 2p coins were only struck for commemorative sets and not issued for circulation."

He then asserted that those peculiar coins were initially part of exclusive souvenir sets that never circulated, reports the Mirror.

Since sharing the video, it has received 5,000 likes and dozens of comments within a week.

One user noted: "Can't be rare, I have like three."

Another added: "I have had some, I just thought they were normal."
