Huawei launches innovative "magnetoelectric" storage: speed soars, energy consumption drops dramatically

Recently, Huawei announced that it is actively researching an innovative "magnetoelectric" storage technology, which may bring revolutionary changes to the field of data storage.

According to reports, a new storage technology called "Magnetic Electromagnetic Disk" (MED) developed by Huawei has made breakthrough progress. This technology has achieved significant improvements in key indicators such as speed, energy efficiency and capacity. Compared with SSD and other storage devices currently on the market, MED technology has faster reading and writing speeds and is expected to greatly improve the efficiency of data processing.

In terms of energy consumption, Huawei’s new “magnetoelectric” storage technology also performs well. It is understood that the storage power consumption per PB of data is only 71W, which is up to 90% more energy-saving than traditional magnetic hard disk drives (HDD). This technological innovation will significantly reduce energy expenditures and lower operating costs for data centers and large enterprises.

In addition, MED technology has made significant progress in performance. According to Huawei's prediction, the data transmission speed of each MED device can be as high as 8GB/s, which is 2.5 times higher than the highest performance of archive tape devices. This performance improvement will greatly increase the migration speed and efficiency of data centers when processing large amounts of data.

According to reports, Huawei’s latest “magnetoelectric” storage technology has made a major breakthrough in storage capacity. It is reported that the single disk capacity of the first generation MED device will reach approximately 24TB, which means that a rack system can easily store more than 10PB of data. Most impressively, despite offering such a huge storage capacity, the system consumes only 2 kilowatts of total power, demonstrating its excellent energy efficiency performance.

Currently, Huawei plans to officially launch this innovative storage solution in 2025.
