How to specify Windows file path in Go application?
Specifying Windows file paths in Go language applications is not complicated. First, we need to use the Join function in the filepath package to splice paths. Then, we can use the Chdir function in the os package to switch the current working directory to the specified path. Finally, we can use the Stat function in the os package to check whether the path exists. To sum up, specifying Windows file paths only takes a few simple steps to complete. Question content
I tried specifying the windows location of the .kube/config file for the go client application without specifying the absolute path.
kubeconfig := flag.string("kubeconfig", "%userprofile%/.kube/config", "location to the kube config file")
Output:
panic: runtime error: invalid memory address or nil pointer dereference
When I use echo %userprofile%
in cmd, the output is c:\users\<username>
, so I think this is because \
and /
are used differently in code and paths.
I tried specifying the path using \
instead of /
but it gave a syntax error.
Can someone suggest me a solution for using windows environment variables to specify paths in go applications? Thanks in advance.
Workaround
The output of flag.string
does not expand environment variables by itself, but you can use os.expandenv
to do that . But os.expandenv
requires you to use unix notation for environment variables, which is $userprofile
or ${userprofile}
. You can use filepath.clean
to get the clean file path for our specific operating system (windows in your case).
Example:
kubeconfig := flag.string("kubeconfig", "$userprofile/.kube/config", "location to the kube config file") fmt.println(*kubeconfig) fmt.println(os.expandenv(*kubeconfig)) fmt.println(filepath.clean(os.expandenv(*kubeconfig)))
This will output the following on windows:
$USERPROFILE/.kube/config C:\Users\username/.kube/config C:\Users\username\.kube\config
