Laravel development: How to use Laravel Valet to quickly set up a development environment?

Laravel is a popular PHP web application development framework. There are many choices for its development environment, among which Laravel Valet is a fast and lightweight choice.

Laravel Valet is a development environment for Mac OS that allows you to develop more efficiently by providing a local development environment for your PHP applications. Similar to other development environments, Laravel Valet can manage your database and various services, but it is lighter, faster and requires less configuration than other development environments.

In this article, I will show you how to use Laravel Valet on Mac OS to set up a fast and efficient Laravel development environment.

Installing Laravel Valet

First, you need to install Laravel Valet on Mac OS. Laravel Valet can be installed in the terminal with the following command:

$ brew install php
$ composer global require laravel/valet
$ valet install
Copy after login

Once the installation is complete, Valet will automatically launch on your Mac.

These commands will install PHP and Composer, and install Laravel Valet as a global Composer dependency. After a successful installation, you should be able to see a list of available Valet commands by typing any Valet command in the terminal.

Start Valet service

After installing Laravel Valet, you can start the Valet service in the terminal to enable the Laravel development environment. To start the Valet service, just type the following command in the terminal:

$ valet start
Copy after login

Once the command is successfully executed, the Valet service will start. You can test whether the Valet service is working properly by visiting "http://localhost" in your browser. If you can see Valet's display page, it means that the Valet service has been started successfully.

Place your Laravel application in a Valet environment

You can now use Valet to create an efficient development environment by storing your Laravel application in a Laravel Valet environment. You just need to place your Laravel application in the "myapp" folder in your local "Sites" directory to use it in Valet.

To create your Laravel application, perform the following steps in the terminal:

  1. Move to the "Sites" directory in the terminal:
$ cd ~/Sites
Copy after login
  1. Create a new folder called "myapp" and go into that folder:
$ mkdir myapp
$ cd myapp
Copy after login
  1. Create a new Laravel application using Composer:
$ composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel .
Copy after login

Now, your Laravel application has been successfully created. Just type the following command and Valet will create a local address for your application on your local machine:

$ valet park
$ valet links
Copy after login

Now you can do this by typing "http://myapp.test" into your browser Access your Laravel application. Please note that ".test" is the default development local domain name prefix of Laravel Valet. You can modify this prefix in the Valet configuration.

Modify the Valet environment to suit your needs

Laravel Valet provides many options and custom configurations that allow you to adjust the Valet environment to suit your needs. The following are some commonly used customization options:

  1. Modify Valet domain name prefix

You can modify the default local domain name prefix generated by Valet through the Valet configuration file. Just open a terminal and enter the following command:

$ valet domain mynewprefix
Copy after login

The above command will change the Valet local domain name prefix to "mynewprefix".

  1. Add SSL Certificate in Valet

By default, Laravel Valet installs a local SSL certificate for each Valet site, which makes Valet useful for encrypted applications is very convenient. You can use Valet's auto-generate certificate feature using the following command in the terminal:

$ valet secure site.test
Copy after login

The above command will automatically create and install a new local SSL certificate using Valet.

Summary

Using Laravel Valet can help developers quickly build an efficient and fast Laravel development environment, thereby improving development efficiency. With the methods introduced in this article, you can easily use Laravel Valet to create and manage your PHP applications. I hope this article can be helpful to your Laravel development journey!
