Laravel Development: How to send SMS and emails using Laravel Notification?

Laravel is a popular PHP-based web application framework that provides a large number of features and tools to simplify web application development. Laravel Notification is an important feature of the Laravel framework, which provides a simple and fast way to send notifications, including SMS and email notifications.

In this article, we will take a deep dive into how to use Laravel Notification to send SMS and email notifications.

Step One: Install the Necessary Dependencies

Before we start, we need to install two required dependencies: Laravel framework and Laravel Notification component.

If you already have a Laravel application, then you can skip this step, otherwise, open a terminal and enter the following command to create a new Laravel application:

composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel my-app
Copy after login

Once created application, we can install the Laravel Notification component, just run the following command in the terminal:

composer require laravel-notification-channels/nexmo
Copy after login

This command will install the nexmo notification driver, which is a notification driver that can be used to send SMS and voice notifications .

Step 2: Create a notification class

We need to create a notification class to define the SMS and email notifications to be sent. We can create a new notification class in the Laravel application using the following command:

php artisan make:notification NewOrder
Copy after login

This command will create a new notification class named NewOrder.php in the app/Notifications directory. This class defines the content of the notification and how it is sent.

Let's take a look at how to define this notification class.

In the toNexmo method, we define the content and method of sending notifications. If we need to send a text message, we can add the following content to this method:

return (new NexmoMessage)
    ->content('你收到了一条新订单。');
Copy after login

If we need to send an email notification, we can add the following content to this method:

return (new MailMessage)
    ->line('你收到了一条新订单。')
    ->action('查看订单', url('/orders'))
    ->line('谢谢你的使用。');
Copy after login

We can add it based on Other methods need to be added in the notification class, such as: cc, bcc and replyTo.

Step Three: Send Notification

We have defined the notification class, now we need to send the notification in the application. Laravel provides several different ways to send notifications, including global broadcasts, queues, and events.

Let's see how to send notifications in a controller.

Here is a simple controller code snippet, we can send a new order notification to the client:

namespace AppHttpControllers;

use AppHttpControllersController;
use IlluminateHttpRequest;
use IlluminateSupportFacadesNotification;
use AppNotificationsNewOrder;

class OrderController extends Controller
{
    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        // 创建新订单的代码...

        $user = auth()->user();

        Notification::send($user, new NewOrder($order));
    }
}
Copy after login

After the creation code of each new order runs, we can use the notification class NewOrder to send new order notifications to the client. In the above code, we use Laravel's Notification facade to send notifications.

Step 4: Test the notification

We have written the notification class and controller, and used Laravel's Notification facade to send the notification. Now we need to test whether the notification can be sent correctly.

Let's test sending email notifications first. Add the following method to the notification class to set the email address of the email test recipient:

public function toMail($notifiable)
{
    return (new MailMessage)
        ->to('test@example.com')
        ->line('你收到了一条新订单。')
        ->action('查看订单', url('/orders'))
        ->line('谢谢你的使用。');
}
Copy after login

Note: This is a test email address that you need to set according to your needs.

Now we can write code again to trigger the notification, using a test email receiver instead of the actual client:

Notification::route('mail', 'test@example.com')
    ->notify(new NewOrder($order));
Copy after login

We can also test sending SMS notifications, add the following lines in the notification class To set the email address of the SMS test recipient:

public function toNexmo($notifiable)
{
    return (new NexmoMessage)
        ->to('+1234567890')
        ->content('你收到了一条新订单。');
}
Copy after login

Note: This is a test phone number that you need to set according to your needs.

Now we can write code to trigger the notification, using a test email receiver instead of the actual client:

Notification::route('nexmo', '+1234567890')
    ->notify(new NewOrder($order));
Copy after login

If you receive an email or SMS notification, then it proves that you have Successfully used Laravel Notification to send notifications.

Try using Laravel Notification to send SMS and email notifications, I hope it will help you build better web applications.
