Install golang deployment
1. Foreword
Go is a very popular open source programming language. It was born at Google to solve the problem of lack of simplicity, efficiency and security of general programming languages. More and more companies are beginning to use Go as a back-end development language, such as Uber, Netflix, etc. In this article, we will introduce how to install Go on a Linux system and deploy it.
2. Install Go
- Download Go
We can find the download link for the latest stable version on the Golang official website. After opening the official website, click the download button to download the Go source code and extract it to a local directory.
- Installing Go
After decompression is completed, we enter the decompressed directory and execute the following command to install:
sudo tar -C /usr/local -xzf go<version>.linux-amd64.tar.gz
This command will install Go to /usr/local/go
directory. We then need to add Go to the PATH environment variable so that the terminal can find the Go binaries. There are many ways to add PATH. You can edit the ~/.profile
file or add information in the /etc/environment
file.
Add the following code at the end of the ~/.profile
file:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/go/bin
After saving and exiting, execute the following command to update the environment variables:
source ~/.profile
- Verify the installation results
After the installation is completed, we enter the following command to verify whether the installation is successful:
go version
If the Go version number is displayed, the installation is successful.
3. Deploy Go application
Before we deploy the application to the server, we need to compile the application into a binary file. Suppose we have a Go application named myapp
, we can use the following command to compile it:
go build myapp.go
This command will generate a Go application named myapp
in the current directory executable file.
Generally, we need to deploy the application to the web server. In this tutorial, we will use Nginx as the web server.
- Installing Nginx
On Debian or Ubuntu systems, we can use the following command to install Nginx:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nginx
After the installation is complete, we need to start Nginx service and verify that it is running properly:
sudo service nginx start curl localhost
If Nginx runs successfully, you will see a welcome message.
- Configuring Nginx
When the Go application executable is ready and placed on the server, we can deploy it to the Nginx server. Below is a basic Nginx configuration file. We can create a file named myapp
in /etc/nginx/sites-available
and add the following content:
server { listen 80; server_name myapp.com; location / { proxy_pass http://localhost:8080; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; } }
The above configuration will Nginx listen to port 80 and proxy the Go application deployed at http://localhost:8080
to port 80. When a request comes into the server, Nginx will forward it to the proxy location, which is http://localhost:8080
.
- Start the application
We can start the Go application using the following command:
./myapp
If an error message appears, please try to solve the error and execute the command again .
- Access the application
Now we can access the application in the browser or using the curl command:
curl http://localhost
We can access the application in Nginx's error Check possible error messages in the .log
(default located at /var/log/nginx/error.log
) file.
4. Summary
It is not difficult to install Go and deploy applications to Linux. By following the above steps, you should be able to complete the installation and deployment easily. If you have questions or suggestions, please leave a message in the message area below.
