Apple's comparison of M1 Ultra GPU to Nvidia is misleading

Apple's latest releases so far this month M1 Ultra, the most powerful Apple Silicon chip to date. This is available in the new Mac Studio and combines two M1 Max chips into one.

The M1 Ultra's specs are certainly impressive, and Apple used a chart (above) to compare the M1 Ultra's GPU performance to the most powerful PC GPU at the time, the Nvidia RTX 3090. Apple backs up the chart with a very carefully worded quote:

For the most graphics-intensive needs, such as 3D rendering and complex image processing, the M1 Ultra has a 64-core GPU — 8 times the size of the M1 — Delivers faster performance than the highest-end PC GPUs available while using 200 watts less power.

M1 Ultra GPU vs. Nvidia RTX 3090

Charts and quotes appear to show Two things. First, the M1 Ultra is more power efficient than Nvidia's graphics card. That part is absolutely correct. Secondly, the M1 Ultra is more powerful than the Nvidia RTX 3090. Macworld says that's not the case - and Nvidia's latest version will put the M1 Ultra in the dust even further.

Apple achieves this misleading comparison by cutting off the chart before the Nvidia GPU approaches its maximum performance.

The M1 Ultra has a maximum power consumption of 215W, while the RTX 3090 has a maximum power consumption of 350W. In the chart, Apple shaves off about 320 watts from the RTX 3090, which severely limits its potential.

Run the chart to 350 watts and Nvidia wins by a mile, as explained in its review of Mac Studio. Nvidia is not content with the status quo.

Now there's the RTX 3090 Ti, which costs as much as the M1 Studio and promises to be harder to beat the M1 Ultra. Most notably, it produces an incredible 450 watts of power, more than twice that of the M1 Ultra. We haven't seen the benchmarks yet, but they will outperform the RTX 3090, which already beat the M1 Ultra handily. A comparison to the RTX 3090 Ti would be very uneven. I don't know if any graphics card can truly compete with Nvidia's latest behemoth, but it certainly isn't made by Apple.

If you need exceptional GPU performance and power efficiency, Apple Silicon is hard to beat. Likewise, if you want to get a lot of power at a relatively affordable price. But if raw power is your priority, Nvidia is still king - and looks like it will remain so for the foreseeable future.
