Latest Windows 11 Dev Build 22567 brings multiple taskbar fixes, but issues persist

A new Windows 11 build is rolling out today on the Dev channel for Insiders. New Build 22567 fixes multiple taskbar issues, and more. Although this version also has a number of known bugs, such as Explorer crashing when Win X is pressed, an issue first discovered in Build 22563.

But first, let’s take a look at what’s new in Build 22567:

Windows Update to Harness More Renewable Energy

Windows Update An attempt will be made to schedule update installations at specific times of the day as this will reduce carbon emissions. Most grids are powered by a variety of sources, including renewable energy and fossil fuels. Whenever possible, Windows 11 will now prioritize installing updates in the background when more clean energy sources are available, such as wind, solar, and hydropower. Users can always choose to install updates now by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates.

This feature is only enabled if your PC is plugged in and regional carbon intensity data is provided by our partners powerMap or WattTime. If enabled, users will see the text shown below on the Windows Update settings page. We're still working on what the text links to - stay tuned for future updates.

This enables you to view your OneDrive storage, recurring billing, and sharing information as part of Microsoft 365 subscriptions in Windows 11. Smart App Control

Smart App Control (SAC) is a new security feature in Windows 11 that blocks untrusted or potentially dangerous applications. SAC can only be enabled on Windows devices performing a clean installation using the latest Insider Preview builds (build 22567 and above). SAC is first configured in evaluation mode. When SAC is in assessment mode, it will learn whether it can help protect you without hindering you too much. If so, it will open automatically. Otherwise, it will automatically shut down. In assessment mode, users can manually turn on SAC in the Windows Security app under the Apps and Browser Controls section. More details about this feature will be shared in the future.

  • Improved input switching responsiveness when using WIN Space.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some Insiders to see black text on dark backgrounds in the input switcher.
  • Resolved an issue where the Japanese IME toolbar could become transparent and the IME candidate window be clipped or not show up at all.
  • If you are using the Japanese IME with a vertical candidate list, the text should now be displayed in the correct orientation.
  • Updated the icon used to hide key visuals in the touch keyboard when focus is set to the password field to help make it easier to understand.
  • Fixed an issue where the new "press backspace" command would not work in Japanese when typing with voice.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Narrator focus to get stuck in the wrong place after inserting an emoji and closing the emoji panel.

[Settings]

  • Voice access will no longer be turned on after logging in, unless the voice access setting is also turned on.

  • Live subtitles now allow you to switch audio devices more smoothly.
  • Changing the size of live subtitles will no longer cause a white flicker in dark mode.

  • The pause and productivity mode icons should no longer be cropped in Task Manager at high DPI.
  • Fixed issue with column preferences not being preserved.
  • The default start page and always on top settings should now work.
  • When there is no content to display under the "..." menu, it will not be displayed now.
  • Mitigated a crash that sometimes occurred when trying to launch Task Manager.
  • Fixed an issue with missing efficiency mode icons on some child processes.
  • Fixed an issue where some setting options were not retained.
  • Fixed an issue where the pause and productivity mode icons were clipped when displayed on a monitor with high DPI settings.

[Lock Screen and Login]

  • Fixed an issue that caused the accessibility flyout on the lock screen to flash.
  • Accessibility flyouts on lock screen position and spacing should now be centered and consistent with the design of other options on this screen.
  • Fixed the borders of the accessibility flyout on the lock screen to display correctly in high contrast mode.
  • Resolved encoding issue in message text when logging in with a security key.
  • Mitigated an explorer.exe crash that some Insiders were seeing when logging into their PC.

[Other]

  • Now when you start a focus session, Notification Center will close and the focus timer will open without you having to Close it.
  • Fixed an issue affecting the ability to open Quick Settings and Notification Center when animations are disabled.
  • Quick Settings and Notification Center should now close them more reliably if you use a gesture to invoke them before trying to close them.
  • Fixed an issue related to the UiaDisconnectProvider API that caused some applications to crash.
  • Mitigated a bugcheck that occurred on several recent flights for Insiders connecting to more than 8 monitors.
  • If you have an app pinned to the taskbar in Windows Sandbox, clicking the app to launch it will now actually work.

Note: Some of the fixes mentioned here in Insider Preview builds from the active development branch may make their way into servicing updates for released versions of Windows 11 that will become generally available on October 5, 2021 middle.

Known Issues

[General]

  • Users running Windows 10 try to log in to the Dev Channel Directly upgrading to build 22563 or later may encounter installation failure with error code 0x8007007f. To bypass, join the Beta channel, install the offered Windows 11 build there, and then switch to the Dev channel to receive current Dev channel updates. This issue is understood and will be fixed in an upcoming release.
  • When doing the device setup experience (OOBE) on Enterprise Edition, the network addition screen will be skipped on the first try. As a workaround, when users see the "Name your computer" option, reboot and restart OOBE. The network addition screen will now appear as expected.
  • We are investigating reports from Insiders that Windows Mixed Reality is not working from a previous flight due to repeated crashes of explorer.exe.
  • Scrollbars do not render correctly on some Win32 applications. This error is only visual as the user can still click/drag the scrollbar as expected.

[Taskbar]

  • If you right-click the Start icon or press WIN X in this version, explorer.exe may will crash. If you use this menu to launch Task Manager, temporarily use CTRL Shift Esc.

[Tablet optimized taskbar]

  • The taskbar doesn't always collapse automatically after launching an app or clicking outside the extended taskbar on a 2-in-1 device.
  • Some areas of the operating system do not yet track the height of the expanded taskbar on 2-in-1 devices, so you may see overlapping components, such as widgets that overlap the taskbar.

[File Manager]

  • Taskbar icons and tooltips may not match the focus state.
  • The Clock app has not yet updated the Windows focus state when configuring the focus session within the app. This will be addressed in a future app update.

[Live Subtitles]

  • Some full-screen apps (such as video players) prevent live subtitles from displaying.
  • Some applications that are located near the top of the screen and are closed before opening Live Captions will relaunch behind the Live Captions window located at the top. Use the system menu (ALT Spacebar) while the application has focus to move the application's window further down.
  • When live subtitles are at the top, the very top of a maximized application (e.g., title bar window management buttons) cannot be reached by touch.
