Discuss several methods of merging two arrays

Apr 18, 2023 am 10:17 AM

In PHP development, array operations are very common, and merging two arrays is also one of the common operations. Normally, we can use PHP's own Array function to merge arrays, of which the most commonly used is the array_merge() function. However, if we don't want to use functions, it is completely feasible to directly use the basic syntax provided by PHP to complete array merging.

In this article, we will explore several methods of merging two arrays without using PHP functions to deepen our understanding of array operations.

Method 1: Use iteration to merge arrays

First, we can use iteration to traverse the second array and add it to the first array. The advantage of this method is that the code is simple and easy to understand. The disadvantage is that it requires the use of loops, which has a certain impact on performance.

The sample code is as follows:

$arr1 = array('a', 'b', 'c', 'd');
$arr2 = array('e', 'f', 'g', 'h');

foreach ($arr2 as $value) {
    $arr1[] = $value;
}
Copy after login

Through the foreach loop, we can add all the elements in array $arr2 to array $arr1, completing the merger of the two arrays.

Method 2: Use a loop to merge arrays

The second method is to use a while loop to determine whether the elements in the second array exist, and then add them to the first array one by one. Until all elements in the second array are added. Compared with the iterative method, this method can better control the loop process and is relatively more efficient.

The sample code is as follows:

$arr1 = array('a', 'b', 'c', 'd');
$arr2 = array('e', 'f', 'g', 'h');

while (count($arr2) > 0) {
    $arr1[] = array_shift($arr2);
}
Copy after login

In this code, we use a while loop to determine whether the array $arr2 is empty. If it is not empty, use the array_shift() function to shift the first element in $arr2. An element is taken out and added to the end of array $arr1. Until all elements in array $arr2 have been added to array $arr1, we have completed the merger of the two arrays.

Method 3: Use the array_splice() function to merge arrays

In addition to the above two methods, you can also use the array_splice() function that comes with PHP to merge two arrays. This function can insert an element into the array or delete an element from the array and return the deleted element.

The sample code is as follows:

$arr1 = array('a', 'b', 'c', 'd');
$arr2 = array('e', 'f', 'g', 'h');

array_splice($arr1, count($arr1), 0, $arr2);

print_r($arr1);
Copy after login

In this code, we use the array_splice() function to insert array $arr2 into array $arr1. We first obtain the number of elements in array $arr1 through the count() function, and set the insertion position to the end of array $arr1. The third parameter 0 indicates that we do not need to delete any elements, while the fourth parameter $arr2 indicates the inserted array. Through this function, we can quickly merge two arrays.

To sum up, PHP provides a very convenient Array function to process arrays, but we can also complete some operations through basic PHP syntax. In actual development, choosing different methods according to needs can improve the efficiency of the program. I hope this article can be helpful to everyone's PHP learning.
