How to delete emails using Golang

Apr 10, 2023 am 09:03 AM

As the use of email becomes more and more widespread, related development work becomes more and more common. Deleting emails is a common need in Golang, so in this article, we will explore how to delete emails using Golang.

The first step, preparation work

Before we start deleting emails, we need to complete some preparation work. First, we need to use a third-party library to access the email service. In this article, we choose to use the Go-IMAP library. This library can access IMAP servers and retrieve mail.

To install the Go-IMAP library, you can use the following command:

go get github.com/emersion/go-imap
go get github.com/emersion/go-imap/client
Copy after login

We also need to know the UID of the message we want to delete. UID is a unique identifier for each message on the IMAP server. We can get the mail UID using:

client, err := imap.DialTLS(addr, nil)
if err != nil {
   log.Fatal(err)
}
defer client.Logout()

if err := client.Login(username, password); err != nil {
   log.Fatal(err)
}

defer client.Select(mailbox, false)

uids, err := client.Search(
   imap.NewSearchCriteria(
      imap.HeaderSubject("Your email subject"),
   ),
)

if err ! = nil {
   log.Fatal(err)
}

if len(uids) < = 0 {
   log.Fatalf("No email found")
}

uid := uids[0]
Copy after login

In this example, we first connect the client to the server and log in. We then select the mailbox and search for messages with a given subject. If a message is found, get the UID of the first message.

Second step, delete the message

Once you have the UID of the message, you can delete the message with the following code:

seqSet := new(imap.SeqSet)
seqSet.AddNum(uid)

if err := client.UidStore(seqSet, "+FLAGS.SILENT", imap.NewFlagSet(imap.DeletedFlag), nil); err != nil {
   log.Fatal(err)
}

if err := client.Expunge(nil); err ! = nil {
   log.Fatal(err)
}
Copy after login

In this example, we use the UID to create A sequence set. We then use the UID to store the message and mark it as deleted. Use the Expunge method to permanently delete selected messages.

Summary

In this article, we learned how to delete emails using Golang. We used the Go-IMAP library to connect to the IMAP server and retrieved the UID of the message and then used this UID to delete the message. This is a simple yet powerful method to delete messages easily.
