How to set up a Git server under Win7 (tutorial)

Apr 03, 2023 am 09:21 AM

Git is one of the currently popular distributed version control systems, which allows multiple people to collaborate on the same project. During the development process, everyone can develop on their own machine first, and then submit the code to the repository for other developers to refer to and modify.

It is not difficult to build a Git server. Let’s introduce in detail how to build a Git server under Win7.

Step One: Install Git

First, we need to install Git on the Win7 machine. You can download the installation package from the official website (https://git-scm.com/downloads) and install it according to the prompts.

Step 2: Create a Git user

For security reasons, we need to create a Git user to ensure the security of the Git server.

In the Windows Control Panel, select "User Accounts", then click "Manage Another Account" and select "Create New Account" in the pop-up window. After setting the username and password of the Git user, you can enter the Git user's home directory.

Step 3: Create the repository

In the Git user's home directory, create a folder named "git-repo" as the storage location of the repository.

Then, open Git Bash and enter the following command in the Git user's home directory:

git init --bare git-repo
Copy after login

This command will create a bare version library in the git-repo folder, and we can Our code is managed in this repository.

Step 4: Configure Git server

In the home directory of the Git user, create a folder named ".ssh" as the storage location for the ssh connection.

Then, enter the following command in Git Bash:

ssh-keygen -t rsa
Copy after login

This command will create an ssh key, put the public key in the ".ssh" folder, and the private key in the user directory .ssh directory under.

After the configuration is completed, we need to add users to the Git server. Execute the following command in the Git user's home directory:

git config --global user.name "your name"
git config --global user.email "your email"
Copy after login

"your name" and "your email" here are the username and email you want to use respectively.

Step 5: Test the Git server

Now that the Git server has been set up, let’s test it.

On another machine, install Git and enter the following command:

git clone git@your_server_ip:git-repo
Copy after login

Where, your_server_ip is the IP address of the machine where the Git server is located, and git-repo is the name of the repository.

If there is no error message, it means that the Git server has been set up successfully.

Summary:

Through the above steps, we can set up a Git server on the Win7 machine to implement code version control. It should be noted that when operating the Git server, you must pay attention to the security of the data to avoid problems such as data tampering.
