How to change directories in Git

Apr 03, 2023 am 09:15 AM

Git is a very important tool for code management and collaborative development. Git provides a series of commands to help us manage code versions, among which the cd command is a commonly used command. This article explains how to change directories in Git.

The basic principle of Git changing directories is to switch branches. Each branch has its own code repository. When we switch branches, Git will replace the code repository in the current directory with the code repository of the new branch.

Suppose we already have a Git repository with the following directory structure:

my-project
├── .git
├── README.md
├── src
│   ├── index.js
│   ├── components
│   │   ├── Button.js
│   │   ├── Input.js
│   │   └── ...
│   ├── utils
│   │   ├── api.js
│   │   ├── helpers.js
│   │   └── ...
│   └── ...
└── ...
Copy after login

We can use the following command to change the directory in Git:

cd <branch-name>
Copy after login

Among them, < branch-name> is the name of the branch you wish to switch to.

For example, if we want to switch to a branch named dev, we can use the following command:

cd dev
Copy after login

After switching the branch, we can do it in the new directory Development work. If we need to go back to the original branch, we can use the following command:

cd -
Copy after login

The above command can switch back to the previous branch. For example, if we are currently on the dev branch, running the cd - command will return us to the original branch.

In addition to using the cd command to change the directory, we can also use the following command to view the current branch and directory:

git branch
git rev-parse --show-toplevel
Copy after login

git branch The command will be listed Displays a list of branches in the current Git repository, where * represents the current branch. For example:

$ git branch
  dev
* master
Copy after login

In the above output, * indicates that the current branch is master.

git rev-parse --show-toplevel The command will display the root directory path of the Git warehouse, for example:

$ git rev-parse --show-toplevel
/Users/user/my-project
Copy after login

The above output indicates that the root directory of the Git warehouse is/Users/user/my-project. These commands can help us easily view the current branch and directory.

During the development process, we usually need to switch branches frequently. Using the cd command provided by Git can help us change directories conveniently. In addition, we can also use other Git commands, such as git branch and git rev-parse --show-toplevel to view the current branch and directory.
