Oblivion Remastered Suffers From Performance Issues The More You Play It
The performance of Oblivion Remastered declines with extended play sessions on all gaming consoles. Continue reading to discover more about the game's challenges across various platforms and what multiple analyses indicate about these issues.
Issues with Oblivion Remastered on Consoles
Performance at 60fps Deteriorates with Prolonged Play
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered enjoyed a successful launch, attracting over 4 million players to explore Cyrodiil. However, Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry highlighted significant concerns, especially regarding the console versions, where performance wanes over time with continuous gameplay.
In an article published by Eurogamer on May 10, they outlined the problems encountered during console play. According to Thomas Morgan, Senior Staff Writer at Digital Foundry, the visual enhancements brought by Virtuous' Unreal Engine 5 are impressive, yet they come with a host of performance issues.
Morgan remarked, "Issues plague every platform: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro, or any Xbox Series console, all face traversal stutters while exploring the open world. Additionally, there are significant frame rates below 60fps, and I've found that performance gradually declines the longer you play - likely due to a memory leak. To top it off, software freezes are the cherry on top, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing back to the system menu after too many save loads."
Their tests revealed that "60fps performance deteriorates with ongoing play on PS5 and Xbox." This suggests that a fresh restart of the game yields a higher frame rate compared to playing for more than 15 minutes. Performance can suffer when moving between areas and cycling through multiple save states, which also stresses the engine.
Challenges with Memory Management
As noted earlier, Morgan points to a memory leak as the root cause of these issues, with all consoles crashing after extended play. A memory leak in gaming occurs when the game allocates memory for a task (like an in-game object or resource) but fails to release it once the task is completed. This leads to an accumulation of unused memory.
This issue is particularly noticeable during world exploration, with all consoles experiencing stutters at the same locations. Both PS5 and PS5 Pro frequently freeze at the same point after repeatedly loading the same save sequences, returning players to the console's main menu. Similarly, Xbox consoles show this problem by abruptly halting save loading and reverting to the Xbox menu.
A problematic save point may function correctly after rebooting the console. Although not all players may encounter these crashes, tests indicate that the likelihood increases with longer play sessions.
Many anticipate that these issues will be resolved soon, as the game's performance problems prevent it from fully leveraging its Unreal Engine 5 enhancements. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (accessible via Xbox Game Pass), and PC.
