An Official Pokémon Book Describes The Ecology Of Wild Pokémon As If They Were Real
A new book delving into the wild lives of Pokémon is launching in Japan. The enduring appeal of Pokémon stems partly from its creatures' inspiration in real-world animals. While Pokédex entries offer glimpses into their behaviors, a new publication promises a deeper dive.
Pokécology, a 192-page book by Yoshinari Yonehara (text) and Chihiro Kinoshita (illustrations), employs a scientific approach to Pokémon in their natural habitats. Both authors are University of Tokyo PhD graduates—Yonehara in veterinary behaviorism and Kinoshita in ecology—with Yonehara also working for The Pokémon Company.
The book will explore various aspects of Pokémon ecology, including feeding and sleeping patterns, migration, and hibernation, with clear explanations of ecological concepts for all readers. Pokécology launches June 18th in Japan; international release plans remain unannounced.
Why Pokécology Matters to the Pokémon Franchise
A Scientific Look at Pokémon
Pokécology shines a light on an often-overlooked aspect of the Pokémon universe. Yonehara's contributions extend beyond this book, encompassing coordination on several Pokémon games and research papers on animal behavior. As the franchise increasingly reflects real-world details, Pokémon behavior takes center stage, highlighting the dedication behind the franchise.
Pokémon Center's Massive New Home Decor Collection
The Pokémon Center has unveiled a large collection of home décor items featuring Fairy, Ghost, Dark, and Dragon-type Pokémon, among others.
The Pokémon Company has previously leveraged its franchise to promote real-world scientific research. A traveling museum exhibit, the Pokémon Fossil Museum, used Pokémon fossils to highlight paleontology, featuring life-sized Pokémon dinosaur skeletons at various Japanese natural history museums.
A Plea for International Release
We Need This Book in English!
An international release of Pokécology is highly desired. The book's premise perfectly aligns with the franchise's appeal and scientific curiosity. This could hopefully inspire a wave of scientifically-focused Pokémon books, potentially inspiring future scientists while enriching the Pokémon world.
