'Gundam GQuuuuuuX' Reveals The New Gelgoog, That's Just Like A GM
Machu and Shuji, the Pomeranian pilots, continue their winning streak in Gundam GQuuuuuuX, much to Challia Bull's satisfaction. Interestingly, the observation room Challia uses is a reused asset from the Rebuild of Evangelion films—a cost-effective and clever production choice.
The episode introduces Shiiko Sugai, a veteran Federation pilot known as "the Witch" for her impressive kill count (and, confusingly, a "unicum," the in-universe term for an ace pilot). Driven by revenge against the Red Gundam for destroying her MAV during the war, Sugai's sweet and unassuming demeanor contrasts sharply with her reputation as an ace pilot.
Shuji's conversations with the Red Gundam hint at a lingering presence of Char Aznable after the Zek Nova incident, and Machu readily agrees to accompany the Red Gundam to Earth.
A subsequent clan battle features peculiar Gelgoogs that are essentially GMs. This plot point stems from an alternate timeline where Char convinced Zeon to mass-produce the Gundam instead of the Gelgoog, resulting in a GM-like mobile suit that Zeon still calls a Gelgoog. While logically consistent, this convoluted backstory feels like fan fiction and might confuse new viewers. The "Gelgoog's" head design bears a striking resemblance to the Daughtress from Gundam X.
Sugai's battle with the Gundams showcases her agile combat style using hooks and wires, but she ultimately falls victim to Shuji's decisive, and arguably unnecessary, attack. The episode concludes with Sugai's death, a seemingly gratuitous act of violence that contrasts with the non-lethal nature of previous clan battles.
Overall, this episode of Gundam GQuuuuuuX feels disjointed and amateurish, with confusing plot points and an unnecessary death. While the unique character designs remain a point of contention, the hope is that the narrative will improve as the series progresses into new story territory. Gundam GQuuuuuuX is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
