CSS-Tricks Chronicle XXXV
This month's roundup covers my activities, CSS-Tricks updates, and news from our affiliated sites.
Smashing Conf San Francisco Presentation
My presentation, an updated version of "How To Think Like A Front-End Developer," is now available on Vimeo (link provided due to embedding restrictions). Each iteration reflects my ongoing learning and evolution as a developer.
One Month Podcast Appearance
I recently joined Chris Castiglione on the One Month podcast. We discussed my coding journey, the definition of a front-end developer, my preferred resources for staying current, and lessons learned from over 300 ShopTalkShow episodes. A full transcript is available.
CodePen Enhancements
CodePen has seen several significant updates: a new "Topics" feature, a full-fledged Pen Editor for all screen sizes, a DEV sharing button, and many more substantial features currently in development. As always, we continue our weekly CodePen Challenge, Spark newsletter, and Radio podcast.
Upcoming Speaking Engagements
I'll be presenting at the following conferences:
- July 9, 2019 – JAMstack_conf_london – London, England
- August 21, 2019 – Abstractions II – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- August 29, 2019 – Front Conference – Zurich, Switzerland
- September 13, 2019 – Web Unleashed – Toronto, Canada
- September 18, 2019 – Dot All – Montreal, Canada
- September 30, 2019 – ARTIFACT – Austin, Texas
- October 16, 2019 – JAMstack_conf – San Francisco, California
Front-End Conference Website Improvements
Our front-end conference website (a Netlify-hosted 11ty site) has received updates, including permalinks for each conference, dynamically generated images (SVG and PNG), and email-sharing functionality via Netlify functions. Future enhancements include customizable backgrounds for each conference. Community contributions are welcome!
May Job Board Discount
Our CSS-Tricks Job Board (powered by CodePen and ShopTalk Show) offers a $100 discount in May. Post a job for $199 (instead of $299) with a 60-day listing.
ShopTalk Show Guests
Dave and I recently interviewed Heydon Pickering, Jessica Ivins, Scott Jehl, and Guillermo Rauch on ShopTalk Show. Be sure to subscribe!
New Bike Acquisition
I purchased a Specialized Vado eBike to make my commute easier, especially considering the hilly terrain and the added weight of cargo and a child seat.
