Got an AMD CPU and Aren't Using PBO? You're Missing Out
Unlocking Ryzen's Potential: A Simple Guide to Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO)
Overclocking your new PC can seem daunting. While performance gains might feel elusive, leaving potential untapped is even less appealing. Fortunately, AMD Ryzen processors offer a straightforward path to enhanced performance with Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO).
Disclaimer: PBO is a form of overclocking. AMD's warranty doesn't cover CPU damage resulting from overclocking. Proceed with caution.
What is Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO)?
AMD's Precision Boost (PB) dynamically adjusts clock speeds, reaching the maximum advertised speed on individual cores based on thermal headroom and power limits. PBO takes this further by overriding power and thermal parameters like PPT, TDC, and EDC. This allows your CPU to hit and sustain maximum clock speeds, though it doesn't directly increase base clock speeds like traditional overclocking.
PBO offers a safe performance boost with minimal effort on most AMD CPUs. This is the easiest way to use PBO without delving into BIOS settings.
PBO also includes an Auto OC feature, letting you adjust the maximum boost clock for a simple overclocking method, further enhanced by the Curve Optimizer for undervolting. More detailed configuration for optimal gains will be covered later.
Why Enable PBO?
Enabling PBO delivers a noticeable performance boost in demanding applications and games with a single BIOS toggle. It's incredibly user-friendly. However, performance gains vary depending on the CPU model; Ryzen 9000 series generally offers better efficiency and cooling than the 7000 series, potentially leading to larger improvements (provided sufficient cooling and motherboard).
Even minor adjustments to the boost clock within PBO can improve performance on any Ryzen chip.
The Curve Optimizer simplifies undervolting, offsetting voltage across the frequency curve. This enhances efficiency, reduces heat, and may slightly extend CPU lifespan.
Prerequisites for PBO
While PBO works with stock coolers, an aftermarket cooler maximizes its potential. A high-quality air cooler is sufficient; you don't need liquid cooling.
The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ARGB is a cost-effective, high-performance air cooler suitable for most consumer processors.
A robust motherboard with sufficient VRMs is also crucial for stability, especially with advanced PBO settings. A B650 or B850 chipset is minimum; X670/X870 motherboards are ideal.
The MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi Gaming motherboard is a high-end AM5 option with features like Wi-Fi 7 and PCIe 5.0.
A reliable power supply is essential; stability issues can arise from power delivery inconsistencies under heavy load. A high-wattage PSU isn't necessary; a reputable brand with sufficient power for your system is adequate.
Fine-Tuning PBO for Enhanced Results
While simply enabling PBO offers benefits, further optimization is possible. Some motherboards provide PBO presets, offering improvements over the automatic settings. Manual adjustment allows for greater control.
For example, a 200MHz clock speed boost, motherboard-defined PBO limits (e.g., 1000 PPT, 180 TDC, 250 EDC), Auto Scalar, and a -30mV Curve Optimizer offset may yield excellent results.
Manual adjustment of PPT, TDC, and EDC might offer limited additional gains, as the motherboard often becomes the limiting factor.
Experiment with the maximum clock speed and undervolting via the Curve Optimizer to find the optimal balance between speed and voltage. Adjusting the thermal throttle control (TJmax) to the CPU's maximum can also allow for higher speeds before throttling.
Based on testing, expect approximately a 10.9% multi-core performance improvement and around 2.5% single-core improvement (single-core gains might be within the margin of error).
PBO is a user-friendly tool for enhancing Ryzen performance, offering effortless overclocking and undervolting capabilities. If you own a Ryzen processor and haven't explored PBO, it's highly recommended, keeping in mind the associated minor risks.
