Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

Apr 11, 2025 am 11:09 AM

The best horror games in 2025 may not be the most comforting things to play, but they're guaranteed to get your adrenaline rushing.

There have been some fantastic additions to the horror game genre recently. With Alan Wake 2, the Resident Evil 4 remake, and Amnesia: The Bunker all offering solid scares. And while some of these are certainly scarier than others, they are all brilliant games to play if you enjoy painfully unsettling locations and frightening chase sequences.

Surely, the future will have just as many big hitters. We'll hopefully get more information on the next mainline Resident Evil sooner rather than later, and then there's the horror-tinged world of Death Stranding 2 to contend with in June. But if you're looking to get stuck in right now and scare your socks off, then this list has you covered for all the latest and greatest entries to the horror genre.

18. Mouthwashing

God is not watching

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Disturbing visuals that are truly the stuff of nightmares Rich, intriguing characters are fleshed out in a short space of time Constantly compelling even when you're too frightened to move Explores difficult themes unashamedly, the writing is brilliant Use of non-linear narrative perfectly builds suspense Haunting soundtrack

Reasons to avoid

-Incredibly surreal and jarring, so won't be for everyone

Mouthwashing is one of the standout horror releases in the last few years, managing to nail a truly unique vibe that'll sit with you long after the credits roll. It's tough to describe exactly what makes Mouthwashing so damn scary. Sure, there's extreme violence, over-the-top gore and a general gristliness to the artstyle, but perhaps the most disturbing moments come from lines delivered coldly by certain characters, and from the silence between the explosive scenes of violence that boil over towards the end of the story.

A warning here, Mouthwashing is a deeply violent and twisted game, one that doesn't hold back on the body horror that takes place on a cargo hauling ship stranded in space. You'll get to know a crew on the verge of complete mental collapse, and follow them into a black void of madness and desperation. Buckle up, because this one doesn't end how you think it will.

17. Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Back to the shack

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

A concise story Entertaining enemy NPCs Great melee/weapon combos An actually enjoyable escort mission

Reasons to avoid

-I can't think of any that weren’t self-inflicted

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4 and PC

Resident Evil 4 was not a game that many felt needed a modern reimagining, but after the magic that Capcom pulled with Resident Evil 2 remake, it was at least worth a shot. Thankfully, this gamble paid off, with Resident Evil 4 Remake standing head and shoulders above its modern peers, managing to pay homage to a cult horror classic, while carving out its own path.

If you've already played the original, fear not, there's plenty of reasons to play the 2023 remake. For one, the combat has been reworked, and so has the story. It's still covers some of the main plot points, but there's some neat twists to bring it in-line with the series' recent offerings. Now, you get to enjoy Resident Evil 4 with 4K visuals, top-of-the-range physics systems that add to the gory action, and some excellent puzzle design for good measure.

16. Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Uninhibited

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Satisfying combat and parkour Complex RPG mechanics Beautifully designed world Decent, branching storyline

Reasons to avoid

-Occasionally dodgy voice acting and dialogue

Dying Light 2 kicks off 20 years after the end of the first game, and as such, its world is looking a whole lot different to the one we left behind. Nature has started to claw back supremacy, so the cities and their building are covered with moss, vines and other clinging greenery. Guns have become largely useless as well, as ammo reserves are so scarce, that they're little more than blunt objects used to strap other weapons to. This time, you play as a Pilgrim, daring to venture out of the city walls in search of resources, and other treasures. This is a dangerous role to play, given how the infected have evolved over time. There's the usual, slow-moving zombies to contend with, but much scarier things come out once the sun sets.

In Dying Light 2, the cities you'll visit are big open areas filled with horrors, and things to do. You parkour around in first-person, as in the first game, though there's more options for abilities that'll expand traversal as you play. There's some great horror missions peppered throughout the campaign, and some seriously tense moments as you hunt down strong enemies in search of valuable resources.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

15. Dredge

Trawling the depthsToday's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Dredge starts off pleasantly enough, as you're tasked with setting out in an adorable little boat in search of fish to catch and sell. But nothing is quite as it seems in Dredge, as you'll start to uncover mysteries about the world around you, revealing a truly horrifying set of secrets that'll have you looking over your shoulder, and checking everything you come across for clues. You see, Dredge is full of scares, spooks and monsters. How far you go will depend on your nerve, and how much you want to risk in hope of bagging bigger rewards.

In terms of indie horror, Dredge is one of the best, perfectly balancing ship-building and fishing, with a gloomy story about madness and the slow corruption of small seaside towns. There's plenty to explore here, but do watch out for the darkness that lurks just beneath the surface.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

14. Fear the Spotlight

Stage fright

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

No jumpscares - perfect for those wanting a more atmospheric experience Gorgeously retro VHS-like visuals The storyline has a lot of heart, it’s easy to root for the main characters Full of mystery, plenty of things to read and explore throughout

Reasons to avoid

-Reliance on puzzles and fetch quests may be frustrating for some-You have no choice but to be stealthy, patience is a virtue!-The “teen scream” vibes might not suit all tastes

If you're looking for a horror throwback that harkens back to the glory days of the PS1, look no further than Fear the Spotlight. There's plenty here for modern fans as well, as horror production company Blumhouse manages to nail a retro-like aesthetic with its first gaming gambit. There's puzzles to solve, and an all around great atmosphere, bolstered by a stellar soundtrack that leans into inventive audio design.

A séance goes horribly wrong at the beginning of Fear the Spotlight, unleashing a dark presence inside an abandoned school. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will find plenty to love here, with a good amount of teenage angst mixed in with the usual scares and spooks you'd expect from a paranormal b-movie. The developers have previously teased this is as a great entry-level game for those wanting to try out horror, and we agree, though there's a lot for veteran horror-heads to dig as well.

13. Until Dawn

Hungry eyes

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Visual upgrades greatly complement the game's cinematic vibe and dread-inducing atmosphere Retains story-focused, character-driven formula of the original, delivering a playable slasher flick Thoughtful DualSense integration and multiple tweaks, like replacing the fixed camera perspective, increase the immersion

Reasons to avoid

-Not many significant upgrades or enhancements beyond the visual overhaul-Very little fresh story content-$60 price a bit steep given the lack of new content

Available on: PS5, PS4, XSX|S, XBO, PC

Until Dawn recently received a remake, beefing up its visuals, and adding in some new ending content. For many, this has proven to be the definitive edition of a game that's been somewhat overlooked since it launched. Now, it's easy to see why Until Dawn has managed to keep players interested over the years, with a star-studded cast, and a slasher-tinged story peppered with player choice.

You'll follow a group of teens as they find themself trapped in a snowy cabin as monsters start to stalk them through the halls. Hopping from character to character, there's plenty of opportunities to make meaningful choices, some that will decide whether someone lives or dies. This adds real replayability, tempting you back in for another playthrough to see how things could have played out differently. Until Dawn is a great horror game that's best experienced with friends.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

12. The Last of Us Part 2

If I ever were to lose you

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Incredibly fluid combat with more elements Rewarding pockets of exploration Plenty of accessibility options Captivating and nuanced storytelling

Available on: PS5, PS4

While The Last of Us series is thought of as more of a story, narrative-focused affair, it's undoubtedly rooted in horror. The Last of Us Part 2 has plenty of scares, included several set pieces that evoke Resident Evil, while using its excellent visuals and atmospheric audio to heighten the tension, and keep it there. You'll fight plenty of humans in this sequel, though it's the infected that steal the show. New variants provide some excellent twists and turns, and the game's improved combat makes firefights more exciting than ever.

The Last of Us Part 2 received a remaster in early 2024, bringing it to PS5 consoles. It's reported that a PC version will follow next year, meaning more players will be able to dive in and experience Ellie's latest story. It's one that follows a more grown up Ellie, as she navigates love, loss, and heartbreak, across a sprawling campaign. This is an absolute must play for fans of narrative-focused games, and those that enjoy zombie horror.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

11. Dead Space (2023)

Cut off their limbs

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Smartly retooled gameplay and story Great graphics and performance Addictive combat and gameplay loop

Reasons to avoid

-Few new scares for returning fans

Available on: PS5, XSX|S, PC

Dead Space received a full remake last year, and it was the perfect reminder of just how special this modern classic is. Often excluded from the conversation when best horror games are concerned, the original Dead Space was a masterclass in survival horror, set aboard one of the most iconic gaming locations of all time: The USG Ishimura. It's hard to pin down exactly why the 2023 version works so well, but a lot of the heavy lifting surely comes from the detail and care given to recreating the atmosphere of the haunted space station. Thanks to some best-in-class lighting effects, Dead Space is scarier than ever.

With a slightly updated control scheme, Dead Space 2023 is easily one of the best horror games released in the last decade or so, offering a great jumping in point for new players. Combat remains weighty, as you work to dismember enemies before going in for the finishing blow. Give this one a go if you're a fan of Resident Evil, but fancy a newer, more sci-fi inspired setting.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

10. Still Wakes the Deep

Horror in the North Sea

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Superbly realized and detailed oil rig setting Incredibly tense atmosphere and strong sense of place Wonderful voice acting Genuinely scary moments and creepy enemies

Reasons to avoid

-Too much handholding and signposting at times-Some overly simple puzzles-Limited freedom and opportunity for exploration

Available on: PS5, XSX|S, PC

Still Wakes the Deep is one of the more recent entries on this list, developed by The Chinese Room and released in June of 2024. It tells the story of Caz, an electrician assigned to work on an oil rig in the North Sea. After an accident, things start getting spooky on the rig, with a strange entity now stalking its dark hallways and vents.

It's best to go into Still Wakes the Deep as fresh as possible, so we'll mostly describe it as being an atmospheric horror game that takes place in a uniquely terrifying setting. The acting is superb throughout, with British actors conveying the dreariness of working on an oil rig perfectly.

As you explore, you'll work to bring parts of the rig back online following the accident, all the while attempting to locate your missing crew. Definitely for fans of more immersive horror like the Outlast and Amnesia series.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

9. Alan Wake 2

Journey into the Dark Place

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Reasons to buy

Fantastic art style and graphics Thrilling music Inventive mechanics Thought-provoking story

Reasons to avoid

-A progression-stopping bug-Now I think I’m a detective

Available on: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

If you're a fan of horror, then Alan Wake 2 is a must-buy. There are some outstanding options for the genre, but none of them manage to pull off every aspect of horror as well as this survival horror game.

There are beautiful graphics and imagery as the title expertly combines the two worlds of the protagonists, Alan Wake and Saga Anderson, as well as reality and video games in expertly shot cutscenes. There's also an intriguing narrative that lends itself to engaging in-game detective work and fights, while music fans will be happy to know that the soundtrack in this horror game has had some serious effort put into it thanks to a great Scandinavian rock band.

The beginning few hours may be too terrifying even for veteran players. However, like in any good survival game, the more you play, the more confidence you get from recognizing fight patterns and gathering resources that will help you push forward. Keep going, and you will be rewarded tremendously.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

8. Little Nightmares

Escape The MawToday's Best DealsView at Amazon Singapore

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and PS4

In Little Nightmares, you control a young girl called Six, who has to navigate a frightening world far too big for her, populated by a wide array of giant and grotesque creatures. Six is just a small girl, so you sneak past them instead of fighting these creatures. The tension in this best horror games contender comes from navigating complicated platforming sections while also being pursued by monsters.

Little Nightmares is a deserved entry on our best horror games list because it creates a feeling of helplessness while making it clear that you still have ways to escape. It takes familiar domestic areas that should be comforting and turns them on their head by making them repulsive and unsafe for Six to travel through. In any other medium, using children this way would be uncomfortable, and a shrunken protagonist would more likely make us think of 90s comedy films than tense horror, so Little Nightmares makes use of it being a game in all the right ways.

The sequel, Little Nightmares 2, also has an all-new protagonist and terrors. However, despite being a great game in its own right, it couldn't replicate the tension of the first title.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

7. The Evil Within 2

A great horror game evolvedToday's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox One, and PS4

The Evil Within series comes from Shinji Mikami, the mind behind Resident Evil – and if that doesn't give you enough reason to pick it up, its nightmarish world likely will.

This third-person survival horror will pull you into a world populated by grotesque and frightening enemies. Mixed with dashes of psychological horror – protagonist Sebastian Castellanos never quite knows what's real and what's a horror cooked up by his own mind.

The Evil Within 2 makes its way onto our best horror games list as it succeeded in modernizing Japanese horror, making it less janky and more approachable. While the first game is good in its own right, the sequel has some unforgettable psychological scare tactics.

6. Dead By Daylight

Killer or Survivor - make your choiceToday's Best DealsView at Amazon Singapore(Switch)

Available: PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC (Android and iOS versions are available, but don't come recommended)

Dead By Daylight stands out in this list of best horror games for being a genuinely scary multiplayer title, showing that you don't have to be alone in the dark to be scared. In Dead By Daylight, a single player takes on the role of a savage serial killer, while four others flee for their lives, desperately trying to fix generators to secure their freedom.

It's a thematic staple for horror, and a thrilling twist on usual PvP combat to boot. With a host of original characters, each with their own abilities and advantages, theremanyts of tactics to develop and deplother kill all the survivors or make your escape. You can also unlock or download characters from films such as Saw, A Nightmare on Elm Street, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which showcases the genuine love Dead by Daylight devs have for its cinematic roots.

Not only is Dead By Daylight one of our favorite horror games, but it's also one of the best crossplay games right now.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

5. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Survival horror comes come to the BakersToday's Best DealsView at Amazon Singapore(PS4)

Available on: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Amazon Luna, and PS4 (and PSVR)

Resident Evil 7 was a breath of fresh air for an increasingly stale series. While it's not the only Resident Evil title on our best horror games list, it brought a much-needed modern understanding of horror movies and games to the series while retaining that distinct Resident Evil feel.

Moving the perspective from third to first person made the fear feel closer and more immediate while leading the way to include a genuinely frightening VR experience in the game.

With a great story and tight gameplay, Resident Evil 7 was the addition to the horror series we all wanted and feared we wouldn't get. The game's success, along with the recent remakes of earlier titles in the series, gained a lot of new fans.

4. The Outlast Trials

A new standard for multiplayer horrorToday's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Available on: PC

The Outlast Trials balances pure terror and hilarity like no other multiplayer horror game, making it a special entry on our best horror games list. Originally a single-player franchise, this next installment in the series managed to duplicate the atmospheric horror found in the first few games and modernize it in a way that can draw in new audiences.

There's multiple trials to put yourself through, either with friends or on your lonesome, each providing different ways to scare and horrify yourself. If you're looking for good old-fashioned jumpscares and anxious hiding, look no further; the Outlast Trials has it all.

3. Amnesia: The Bunker

Not for the faint of heart

Our expert review:

Today's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PC.

Amnesia: The Bunker lives up to the petrifying history that this series has; with its claustrophobic, psychological, and bloody scares, this horror game is not to be taken lightly.

Trapped in a bunker with only one exit available, you must navigate the dwindling light and precarious tunnels to complete the puzzles and secure the dynamite you need to explode your way to freedom. Unfortunately, like the first title Amnesia: The Dark Descent, The Bunker has an unwelcome guest; The Beast.

This creature will haunt you through the dark bunker, waiting for its moment to strike and drag you into the dark hollows below. Can you solve the puzzles while fending off this monster? Probably not without experiencing some heart-stopping scares. This title is one of the scariest additions to our best horror games list, so play at your own risk.

2. Visage

Horrifyingly realisticToday's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Visage made its way onto our best horror games list thanks to its eerily creepy psychological horror basis and its uncannily realistic environments. However, it may possible trigger seizures for those with photosensitive epilepsy.

This first-person survival horror game is set inside a huge and terrifying house, here you have to explore endless mazes which fill your head with the memories of all the dead families who used to occupy this place.

If you're in the mood to be truly horrified this Halloween then Visage is the game for you. Just be warned, maybe play it with the lights on.

Best horror games: the scariest titles to play in 2025

1. Alien: Isolation

A terrifying and unforgettable classicToday's Best DealsCheck Amazon Singapore

Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC

Of the countless games to use this precious creative license over the years, developer Creative Assembly is the first actually to create a game that lives up to it. The game takes place 15 years following the events of the 1979 Ridley Scott film, putting players into the space boots of Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda Ripley.

Taking on a first-person perspective and squaring you off with a single xenomorph hunting you across a vast space station in darkness, Alien: Isolation nails what it felt like watching the film for the first time. The vibe makes it so deserving of the title of one of the best horror games, and Isolation feels as if you're playing through the movie.

Throw in the excruciatingly-clever artificial intelligence afforded to the alien, along with an absolutely gripping virtual reality experiment, and you have the trappings of a modern horror classic.

How we picked the best horror games

The best horror games is not an easy list to collate; with the sheer number of new titles released, it can sometimes seem impossible to get through them all. Thankfully the TechRadar Gaming team has a core appreciation and somewhat twisted love for horror games.

"I make it my mission to play every horror game I can, having reviewed The Outlast Trials, Amnesia: The Bunker, and Layers of Fear remake in the last year or so. I started playing horror games at a very early age as a test of coverage, and at this point, I'm in too deep to turn back." - Ellie Gould, TechRadar Gaming reviewer.

What horror games I'm playing right now

Recently, I decided that a mindlessly terrifying co-op horror game is exactly what my tired brain needs. After some digging, I decided to give Inside the Backrooms another go.

This multiplayer survival horror game is hilariously terrifying. Transported into the infamous backrooms, you're plagued with strange visions and spine-chilling noises at every turn. Despite hiding in a locker for 30 minutes and bursting my friend's eardrum after I screamed too loud, it was genuinely good fun, even if it's not technically or narratively as impressive as the entries on our best horror games list.
