Soldiers need to be disciplined and strong-willed, but in this Avowed quest, they are far from that. They have taken actions into their own hands and split off from the Thirdborn city and created their own militia. Their goal is noble, taking care of a threat no one else has successfully completed, but doing so has angered their superiors.

Accepting the Quest

The most likely scenario is you’ve stumbled across this quest after the Fires in the Mines quest purely because it’s right next to one another. OK, they aren't immediately next to one another, but they’re in the general region. This is located in the north of the Shatterscarp region where you’re likely to come across a large Xaurip base.

You can go inside and start wreaking havoc, but instead head a little more east where you’ll find a rather frazzled soldier. Upon talking to him, he introduces himself as Private Naruki, a soldier from the Thirdborn who has traveled with his compatriots to finally take care of the Xaurip problem that has been pestering them for so long.

Unfortunately, it seems like things did not go so well as only Private Naruki is here and the rest of the soldiers are still in the base. He hires the Envoy to go into the heavily secured base and find his fellow Aumaua, hopefully alive.

Alternatively, if you critical path the area and go straight to Thirdborn, you can pick up this quest from Temerti after her discussion with Yatzli.

Infiltrating the Base

The goal is to find and collect the badges of all four of Naruki’s mates, which already paints a grim look at their potential fate. The Xaurip camp is massive, unlike anything you’ve seen before, as it spans not only two open areas, but extends further into a cave area with a climb to the top of the cliffside.

The first wave of Xaurips will be your initiation challenge as it’s what you can expect further into the quest. There are quite a few soldiers that will be triggered as soon as you pull the first group of enemies, which can cause upwards of ten different Xaurips to descend upon your position. Considering there are shamans and priests among their ranks, it becomes a challenging encounter.

After disposing of these, dive into the water and come out on the other side. There are fewer enemies in the cave, making things a little easier. Unfortunately, on dry land, you will come across our first slain soldier: Kiri. Pick up his badge and head up some planks to the west. Down a flight of stairs, you will come across the second slain soldier, Manu, alongside a Totem Fragment.

Only two left, there will be a small campsite inside the cave with Xaurip Screamers and Skirmishers, alongside the dead body of Sergeant Hasui. Hasui also has a journal you should read, as it might explain some of Naruki’s strange behaviors. Afterward, head outside to a small bridge, and be very careful. This is easily the most dangerous spot in the entire mission as there’s very little room to maneuver, along with more enemies than you’ll probably want to handle. It’s best to retreat back into the small cave when getting overwhelmed.

After taking care of the final Xaurips, head up the cliffside to find the final campsite for the reptiles, along with Captain Ruiki slowly bleeding out. He doesn’t have long but informs you of Naruki’s cowardice. He gives you his badge before enjoying his final few moments.

All that needs to be done is return to Naruki. Here you have two options. You can quietly give him the badges and not mention any of the concerns that Hasui wrote in her journal or Ruiki’s last message to you before going into sweet endless slumber. I

f you do this, the mission will end. If you do bring up what they had to say, Naruki will make excuses. You can then call him a coward, and he demands you take it back, and if you double down, he’ll attack you. Fortunately, it seems Ruiki was correct, he’s all bark and no bite as the fight is barely a fight. If you choose this route, you’ll need to return all badges, including Naruki’s, back to Temerti in Thirdborn.
