Monster Hunter Wilds: Complete Material Retrieval Guide
There are a lot of items you can get in Monster Hunter Wilds. Mushrooms, berries, bones, scales, herbs, fish, and so, so much more. You could gather all these items manually, and for a long time you must, but that gets tiresome and time-consuming. So why not let others do that work for you while you're out hunting?
That's the role that Material Retrieval plays. Characters from the many settlements in the game will gather items for you on their daily rounds, gathering until there is no more space for them to hold. This is a great way to speed up gathering, and even get some rare materials, too. Here's how the Material Retrieval process works.
Unlocking Material Retrieval
Material Retrieval can be unlocked for every settlement in the game, though they all unlock at various different times. The vast majority are unlocked through side quests located in each village, though the very first one is unlocked after completing Chapter Four, Mission Two.
Here are the characters in each settlement that offer Material Retrieval once you have unlocked the system there:
- Kunafa - Murtabak
- Wudwud Hideout - Plumpeach
- Azuz - Sabar
- Sild - Rysher
- Suja - Apar
That gives five Material Retrieval characters in total, all of whom can gather materials simultaneously. Apar is the first you unlock as part of the story, while every other character will offer their services after completing a quest for them in each region. You must physically travel to each character to collect the gathered goods they have for you.
Once you finish the Low Rank story, Nata acts as a Villager Intermediary, letting you collect your gathered goods from every character from any Base Camp.
How Does Material Retrieval Work?
Material Retrieval is, for the most part, a system that runs in the background. Speaking with each character, or Nata after he becomes Village Intermediary, will let you choose from a variety of items for each character to bring back, and they can hold up to 16 independent items, with stacks of varying sizes. The item you choose won't be the only items they bring back for you, but it will make up the bulk of it.
This means if you send a character to gather Might Seeds, they could bring back 16 full slots of them, but a stack of five in each slot for a total of 80 Might Seeds.
When speaking with a Material Retrieval character, they will offer a list of items they can gather for you, with this list expanding with subsequent side quests. A Star Rating is given to each item, from as low as half a star, to three full stars. The higher the stars, the faster they will gather an item, the more of that item they will bring back, and the bigger each stack of that item will be.
However, the current weather also affects the Star Rating of each item. For example, certain items, like berries, will be more bountiful during the Plenty, while others might be rarer. Make sure to keep the weather in mind in each region when requesting what items you would like.
Activating Gathering Boosts
A later system that can unlock for Material Retrieval, after completing more side quests for the Material Retrieval characters, are Gathering Boosts. Gathering Boosts make the specific village you help gather items more quickly for three days, letting you stockpile materials even quicker. So how do you unlock Gathering Boosts?
At random points, villages will begin to have problems with certain monsters, and defeating these monsters will activate the Gathering Boost. For example, a specific Balahara may be causing trouble for Kunafa. Upon defeating it, Kunafa will gain a Gathering Boost for three days, meaning Murtabak will gather items more quickly for you.
Even better, the Gathering Boost applies to Item Trading as well, letting you trade certain items for the same amount on your end, but with double items given on their end. Make sure to take advantage of every aspect of the Gathering Boost for the three in-game days that it is active.
If you're in a hurry, make sure to save this troublesome monsters as an investigation. This lets you you hunt them whenever you want, and still get the Gathering Boost.
This is shown both in the Material Retrieval menu when speaking with the respective characters, or in the Environment Overview for the area on the map. These are always Tempered Monsters, and are sometimes even duos, but taking them down is well worth the risk.
