How to juggle multiple accounts within individual smartphone apps
This article explains how to manage multiple accounts on various apps using in-app features, your phone's operating system, or third-party tools.
Managing Multiple Accounts Within Apps
Many popular apps support multiple accounts. Instagram, for instance, allows up to five accounts. Adding an account involves accessing the profile settings, tapping the profile name, selecting "Add account," and then choosing to create a new account or log into an existing one. Switching between accounts is straightforward: tap the profile name and select the desired account from the dropdown menu, or double-tap your profile picture.
Twitter offers similar functionality. Access your profile, tap the account icon (the arrow on Android or overlapping squares on iOS), and select "Create a new account" or "Add an existing account." Switching is done via the same icon.
Facebook only allows switching between your primary account and managed pages, but Messenger supports multiple accounts. Tap your avatar, select "Switch account," and add or log into another account.
Email clients generally handle multiple accounts natively. In Gmail, tap your avatar to switch or add accounts.
Leveraging Your Phone's Operating System
Android allows multiple Google accounts at the system level. Go to Settings, tap "Google," select your account, and choose "Add another account." This automatically integrates with Google apps. Switching between accounts is done through the avatar icon in each app. Google Calendar displays events from all linked accounts; use the menu to manage visibility. YouTube allows account switching via the avatar icon.
Android also supports multiple user profiles, each linked to a separate Google account. This creates completely separate environments, but consumes more system resources. Access this through Settings > System > Multiple users.
iOS only allows one Apple ID per device, but multiple Google accounts can be managed within Google apps using the method described above.
Some Android manufacturers offer additional features. Samsung's Dual Messenger allows running multiple instances of certain apps (Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.). Enable it in Settings > Advanced features > Dual Messenger. OnePlus devices with OxygenOS offer a similar feature called Parallel Apps.
Utilizing Third-Party Tools
If in-app and OS features are insufficient, third-party apps can help. Parallel Space for Android (free or paid ad-free version) clones apps, allowing separate account logins within the app. App Cloner offers a more robust cloning solution but is not available on the Google Play Store. Installation from the app's website is at your own risk.
iOS options are more limited due to Apple's restrictions. Friendly Social Browser (free or paid ad-free version) provides a web-based solution for managing multiple accounts on certain platforms (Facebook, Messenger, Twitter), but functionality may be limited compared to native apps. This app is also available on Android.
