Liar's Bar: How To Play Liar's Dice
Liar's Bar was a surprise hit when it launched on early access, being a pretty complex game with simple elements. It's got equal parts charm and dark humor, made into a game that's fun to play with friends, or fun to play with randoms.
Liar's Bar has two different game modes inside: Liar's Deck and Liar's Dice. Liar's Dice might seem simpler at face value than Liar's Deck, but it has just as much going on as the card-based game. It's a game that's easy to learn, but difficult to master; here are the basics.
The Basics Of Liar's Dice
In Liar's Dice, every player gets five dice. These five dice are rolled every round, and their values are hidden from every player other than the player that rolled them.
Every player in Liar's Dice is also given two shots of poison. You'll live after drinking one shot, and the second shot will always be lethal.
How A Round Works In Liar's Dice
Each round, every player rolls their dice, and looks at their values. In a full game of four people, that will be twenty dice rolled overall, with a one-in-six chance of any number being rolled on each dice.
At the beginning of a round, the player that goes first decides on a dice value between one and six, and decides how many dice of that value were rolled across the entire table.
The bet takes into account all 20 dice on the table, not just their own.
The player that goes next decides whether they want to increase that bet, or call the previous player a liar.
Increasing A Bet
When increasing a bet, you have to either declare a higher number of the same dice value, or declare a number of dice of a higher value. This sounds confusing, but it isn't.
For example, if a player bets three fours, then the next player must either bet four fours, or bet a number of a higher dice value. This does wrap around back to one, as well. If a player bets five sixes, the next player could bet five ones.
Declaring A Bet A Lie
If you accuse the last bet of being a lie, every player reveals their dice. A tally is done to check the dice, to see whether the bet was correct. If a player bet that there were five threes, and there were five or more threes, then they were correct. Any number lower, and they were wrong.
- If the bet was correct, then the player that declared the bet a lie must drink a shot of poison.
- If the bet was incorrect, then the player that made the bet must drink a shot of poison.
Ending A Game Of Liar's Dice
A game of Liar's Dice ends when all but one player has drunk their second shot of poison. This game generally has less wiggle room than Liar's Deck, where you could theoretically survive being wrong on five separate occasions. You only get one free blunder in Liar's Dice before you lose.
