FiiO KA15 portable DAC and headphone amp with retro cassette-player design launched
FiiO is best known for bringing high-quality audio gear from the pricey audiophile realm down to a level that more of us can afford. The Chinese brand is continuing that trend with the launch of the KA15, a new portable DAC and headphone amplifier that stands out from the crowd thanks to a uniquely retro tape-player design.
Unlike any other device in its category, the KA15 sports a 0.96 inch IPS LCD screen which displays a spinning tape-player animation, in addition to the current settings. As a result, it looks like a miniature version of FiiO’s CP13 cassette player(curr. $100 on Amazon), an effect that’s further enhanced in the sky blue colourway common to both devices. The CNC-milled and anodised aluminium construction gives it a solid look.
The FiiO Control app (available on Android only) can be used to adjust a number of settings, most importantly a 10-band parametric equaliser. For desktop use, the EQ can also be controlled via a web interface. Speaking of desktop use, the KA15 has a powerful desktop mode with a balanced output of 560 mW per channel.
For use with mobile devices, FiiO has also enabled intelligent power consumption, which ensures that the KA15 doesn’t draw any more power from your phone than is absolutely necessary. FiiO claims up to 93% less power consumption in standby mode, compared to the older KA5.
The KA15 can handle up to 768 kHz/32 bit and DSD256 audio, using dual Cirrus Logic CS43198 chips and dual op-amps. On the connectivity front, there are two outputs – 3.5 mm single-ended, and 4.4 mm balanced. The 3.5 mm output supports in-line controls and microphones, and can connect to the Nintendo Switch, PS5 and other gaming devices. It also doubles as an SPDIF coaxial to connect to an external decoder.
At 52 x 25 x 11 mm (~ 2 x 1 x 0.4 inches), the KA15 is perfectly compact for use on the go. It also comes with a neat leatherette case with cutouts for the buttons and LCD. The KA15 is now available on Amazon for $110, in black and sky blue.
