纽约时报报道，分析家表示，这也是数据库巨头应对低端数据库以及开放资源数据 库压力的重要一步。甲骨文公司表示，将会在不久之后发布Oracle 10g Express Edition的测试版本，而时间则被定在了今年年底。
据悉，该数据库软件的定位为学生以及小型企业和拥有自主开发能力的软件制造商。实际上，在基本功能方面，此次即将发布的数据库将和以往产品大致相似，只不过甲骨文在某些特定功能中加入了限制。另一方面，该数据库软件将智能运行于一块芯片的服务器，拥有1G内存。
在最近几年中，开放资源数据库软件得到了越来越多的关注，因此也在消费者层面引起了极大反响。其中MySQL就是最为突出的一个，另外IBM在本月早些时候发布了完全免费的DB2数据库软件，其中加入了PHP开发包。与此同时，微软计划在下个月发布免费的SQL Server 2005版。
