I have written a lot about CLI applications. Recently I discovered some of Google’s CLI tools like “Google Translator”, “Google Calendar” and “Google Contacts”. Here, I want to share it with you.

命令行版谷歌翻译:Translate Shell

Today we are going to introduce the “Google Translator” tool. Since my native language is Tamil, it took me many times in a day to understand its meaning.

Google Translate is widely used by people of other languages.

What is Translate Shell

Translate Shell[1] (formerly Google Translate CLI) is a command-line translator that uses Google Translate (default), Bing Translate, Yandex.Translate, and Apertium. It gives you access to these translation engines in your terminal. Translate Shell is available on most Linux distributions.

How to install Translate Shell

There are three ways to install Translate Shell.

  • Download the self-contained executable
  • Manual installation
  • Install via package manager
Method 1: Download the self-contained executable file

Download the self-contained executable file and place it in the /usr/bin directory.

$ wget git.io/trans
$ chmod +x ./trans
$ sudo mv trans /usr/bin/
Copy after login
Method 2: Manual installation

Clone the GitHub repository of Translate Shell and compile it manually.

$ git clone https://github.com/soimort/translate-shell && cd translate-shell
$ make
$ sudo make install
Copy after login
Method 3: Through the package manager

The official repositories of some distributions include Translate Shell, which can be installed through the package manager.

For Debian/Ubuntu, use APT-GET command [2] or APT command [3] to install.

$ sudo apt-get install translate-shell
Copy after login

For Fedora, use the DNF command [4] to install.

$ sudo dnf install translate-shell
Copy after login

For systems based on Arch Linux, use Yaourt command [5] or Packer Mingkuai[6] to install from the AUR repository.

$ yaourt -S translate-shell
or
$ packer -S translate-shell
Copy after login
How to use Translate Shell

安装好后,打开终端闭关输入下面命令。 谷歌翻译会自动探测源文本是哪种语言,并且在默认情况下将之翻译成你的 locale 所对应的语言。

$ trans [Words]
Copy after login

$ trans :ta "what is going on your life?"
what is going on your life?

உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் என்ன நடக்கிறது?

$ trans -b :ta thanks
