#The Windows Subsystem for Linux has brought us both a revelation and a revolution. Now in its second version (WSL2), the technology has made huge strides in recent years, with more and more people using it in Windows to enjoy Linux distributions and applications.

With the first Insider build of Windows 11 rolling out, the Linux community is intrigued by the progress Microsoft is making. Benchmarks comparing WSL2 to "bare metal" Ubuntu show that performance is pretty impressive... but leaves something to be desired.

These tests were performed before the latest version (22000.65) was released, but the results should be roughly the same.

Performance comparison between Windows 11's WSL2 and Ubuntu Linux, who wins?

Michael Larabel of the site explains:
All stable updates for Windows 10 H121 are tested with WSL2 and then again with Windows 11 22000.51 Tested. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was used to test both Windows versions using WSL2. After this, Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS was tested on bare metal to see "raw" Linux performance on the same hardware, and then again with Ubuntu 21.04 as the latest stable (non-LTS) release.
The results are impressive. WSL2 was found to provide nearly identical performance to native Ubuntu in many cases. However, there are many instances where this is not the case, and the Windows 11 implementation of WSL2 does not even perform as well as Windows 10. But as Phoronix points out, this "may be due to additional debug changes currently being released with these builds."
One of the key observations from the testing is:
WSL2 performance still tends to outperform bare metal Linux when it comes to I/O Installation is much slower, but at least performs better than original WSL (WSL1).
#With interest in Linux under Windows continuing to grow, it should be no surprise that performance is something people will be paying close attention to as Windows 11 develops. Larabel promises:
#Obviously, I'll be back with some new benchmarks on official build performance once Windows 11 is officially released.
Currently, full details and results of the current benchmarks can be viewed here.
