How to handle image compression when saving remote images using PHP?

In actual development, we often need to obtain images from the network and save them to the local server. However, some remote images may be too large, which requires us to compress them to reduce storage space and increase loading speed. PHP provides some powerful extensions to handle image compression, the most commonly used of which are the GD library and the Imagick library.

GD library is a popular image processing library that provides many functions for creating, editing and saving images. The following is an example of using the GD library for image compression:

function compressImage($url, $newName, $quality = 75) {
    // 从URL获取图片
    $image = file_get_contents($url);

    // 创建图像资源
    $imageRes = imagecreatefromstring($image);

    // 获取图像信息
    $width = imagesx($imageRes);
    $height = imagesy($imageRes);

    // 创建新图像资源
    $newImageRes = imagecreatetruecolor($width, $height);

    // 复制并压缩图像
    imagecopyresampled($newImageRes, $imageRes, 0, 0, 0, 0, $width, $height, $width, $height);

    // 保存图像
    imagejpeg($newImageRes, $newName, $quality);

    // 释放资源
    imagedestroy($newImageRes);
    imagedestroy($imageRes);
}
Copy after login

The above code first uses the file_get_contents function to get the image from the specified URL and stores it into the variable $image middle. Then, convert it into the image resource required by the GD library through the imagecreatefromstring function.

Next, get the width and height of the image and use the imagecreatetruecolor function to create a new image resource that is the same size as the original image.

Then, use the imagecopyresampled function to copy the original image into a new image resource and compress it. The compression quality here is specified by the $quality parameter, and the default is 75.

Finally, save the compressed image to the specified file name $newName through the imagejpeg function.

When using this function, you can adjust it as needed. You can change the compression quality by modifying the value of the $quality parameter. The higher the value, the better the quality and the larger the file size.

In addition to the GD library, you can also use the Imagick library for image compression. Imagick is a powerful image processing library that provides more advanced image processing functions. The following is an example of using the Imagick library for image compression:

function compressImage($url, $newName, $quality = 75) {
    // 实例化Imagick对象
    $image = new Imagick($url);

    // 设置压缩质量
    $image->setImageCompressionQuality($quality);

    // 保存图像
    $image->writeImage($newName);

    // 销毁对象
    $image->destroy();
}
Copy after login

When using the Imagick library, first create an Imagick object through new Imagick and pass the URL of the remote image to it as a parameter.

Then, use the setImageCompressionQuality method to set the compression quality.

Finally, use the writeImage method to save the compressed image to the specified file name $newName, and use the destroy method to destroy the object .

Whether you use the GD library or the Imagick library, you can choose the method that suits you for image compression according to your needs. These methods can not only reduce the storage space of images, but also increase the loading speed of web pages and improve user experience.

Explain JSON Web Tokens (JWT) and their use case in PHP APIs. Explain JSON Web Tokens (JWT) and their use case in PHP APIs. Apr 05, 2025 am 12:04 AM

JWT is an open standard based on JSON, used to securely transmit information between parties, mainly for identity authentication and information exchange. 1. JWT consists of three parts: Header, Payload and Signature. 2. The working principle of JWT includes three steps: generating JWT, verifying JWT and parsing Payload. 3. When using JWT for authentication in PHP, JWT can be generated and verified, and user role and permission information can be included in advanced usage. 4. Common errors include signature verification failure, token expiration, and payload oversized. Debugging skills include using debugging tools and logging. 5. Performance optimization and best practices include using appropriate signature algorithms, setting validity periods reasonably,
