Fix: Firefox freezes or becomes unresponsive on Windows 11
➡Out of Memory
In the rush of moments, you keep opening new tabs and new tabs, but sometimes you forget that all tabs use the memory in your system.
At some point, the browser becomes slower and unresponsive because there simply is no more memory to allocate to so many tasks.
So before getting into the tweaking part, try closing some tabs you don’t need and see if Firefox stops freezing.
We also recommend reading more about what to do if Firefox is slow, as this may be the source of the problem.
What should I do if Firefox freezes on Windows 11?
1. Create a new profile
- Open Firefox and enter about:profiles in the search bar. This will open Profile Manager.
- Click Create New Profile to start the wizard.
- Choose a name for your profile and click Done.
You should only use the Select Folder option when you wish to choose where to store the configuration files on your computer.
If you choose your own folder location for the configuration file, select a new or empty folder. If you select a non-empty folder and then you delete the profile and select the "Delete Files" option, all contents in that folder will be deleted.2. Disable Firefox’s hardware acceleration
- Click the menu icon in the upper right corner of Firefox and select Settings.
- Select the General tab from the left pane and scroll down on the right until you reach the Performance section.
- Uncheck the Use recommended performance settings checkbox and do the same for the Use hardware acceleration when available feature.
- Close Firefox and then open it again to see if Firefox is still frozen.
Hardware acceleration is generally a great thing because it uses your graphics card to take some of the load from system memory.
However, depending on its settings, this can only do more harm than good. Check for any changes in browser behavior and undo the process if the situation does not improve.
3. Create a new database for Firefox
- Click the Firefox menu icon in the upper right corner and select the Help option.
- Select More troubleshooting information.
- Click Open Folder in Application Basics.
- Close Firefox.
- Now, go to the open Firefox folder and find and rename the files places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old and places.sqlite-journal to places .sqlite-journal.old.
- Launch Firefox and see if it is working properly now.
4. Delete the session restore file
- Click the browser Menu icon and select the Help option.
- Select from list More troubleshooting information.
- Click Open Folder in the Application Basics section.
- Close the browser.
- Delete the sessionstore.js file and any related files such as sessionstore-1.js etc. from your Profile folder. If you have not activated the Restore Session option in Firefox, you will not find any such files.
- Launch the browser again to see if the solution resolves the issue.
5. Reset the browser
- In Firefox, click the Menu icon and select Help.
- Select More Troubleshooting Information.
- Find and select the Refresh Firefox option.
- Continue the reset process and once complete, open your web browser again.
This ends our list of solutions if Firefox freezes, we hope that by applying them, your browser can work normally again.
If the problem doesn't resolve, it may be time to consider alternatives, and we recommend Opera as one of the most reliable options out there.
By changing it, you'll start over with a new browser that may better suit your needs, and won't encounter this situation again.
