Apple received more than 2,500 U.S. patents in 2021, ranking seventh
According to IFI Claims, Apple received 2,541 patents in the United States last year, surpassed by only six other companies.
IFI Claims Patent Services reveals in its ranking of the top 50 U.S. patent assignees in 2021 (via Patently Apple), compared to the previous year , Apple received 250 fewer patents in 2021, a decrease of 9%. Even so, Apple moved up one spot in the 2021 rankings.
Apple’s number of authorized patents is exceeded by IBM, Samsung, Canon, TSMC, Huawei and Intel. The following top ten companies, excluding IBM and Samsung, have between 2,000 and 3,000 issued patents. IBM and Samsung dwarfed the other top companies, claiming 8,682 and 6,366 patents respectively.
Among its direct competitors, Apple still has more patents granted than LG, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Samsung Display, Amazon, Sony and Google. The top 20 companies with the most patents awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2021 are as follows:

IFI Claims' 2021 Global 250 ranking reveals the world's largest patent holders by looking at all patents currently held by a company. In these rankings, Apple ranks 37th with 20,491 active patents. Samsung currently leads the world in active patents with 90,416. Microsoft, LG, Sony, Intel and Qualcomm also beat Apple in active global patents.
