CentOS is a popular Linux operating system used in server and desktop environments. Github is currently one of the most popular code hosting platforms, where many developers share and manage code. This article will explain how to install Git and GitHub Desktop on CentOS so that you can access GitHub repositories in your local environment.

1. Install Git

  1. First, update your CentOS system:

sudo yum update

  1. Execute the following Command to install Git:

sudo yum install git

  1. After the installation is completed, check the version information of Git through the following command:

git --version

  1. If you see the output version number, Git has been successfully installed.

2. Install GitHub Desktop

GitHub Desktop is the official desktop application provided by GitHub. It provides a simple and easy-to-use user interface to facilitate you to manage and submit code locally.

  1. Visit the official website of GitHub Desktop (https://desktop.github.com/) and download the latest version.
  2. After the download is completed, find the download file and double-click to open it to install. Just follow the prompts.

3. Install and configure the ssh key

You need to configure the SSH key to connect the local environment to the GitHub repository. This is an encrypted authentication method that allows us to interact with GitHub without entering a password.

  1. Open a terminal window and enter the following command to check if an existing key already exists:

cd ~/.ssh
ls

  1. If you already have an ssh key, it can be found in the following path (the file name is id_rsa.pub). If you don't have an ssh key, generate it in the next step.
  2. Assuming you need to generate a new key, use the following command:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "your_email@example.com"

  1. You will be asked to enter a password for the new key (can be left blank). Next, you will see the following message:

Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Enter file in which to save the key (/home/you/.ssh/id_rsa): [Press enter]
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): [Type a passphrase]
Enter same passphrase again: [Type passphrase again]

  1. Now, the public key is stored below In the path:

~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub

  1. Open the id_rsa.pub file using an editor and copy the SSH key to " SSH and GPG Keys" section. This way, you can access your GitHub repository for free.

4. Verify that the setting is successful

  1. Open a terminal and enter the following command to test your SSH connection:

ssh -T git @github.com

  1. If you see the following output, the connection is successful:

Hi username! You've successfully authenticated, but GitHub does not provide shell access.

At this point, you have successfully installed Git and GitHub Desktop on your CentOS system and configured an SSH key to connect to the GitHub repository. Now you can access GitHub in your local environment and manage and commit your code.
