How to install MySQL using RPM packages on CentOS systems

Apr 19, 2023 pm 02:11 PM

CentOS is an open source operating system based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and is widely used in enterprise-level applications. MySQL is an open source relational database management system. It has also received widespread attention and use because of its efficiency, stability and security. This article will introduce how to use RPM packages to install MySQL on CentOS systems.

Step one: Download the MySQL RPM package

Download the corresponding version of the MySQL RPM package on the official website, the download link is https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/. We need to download the RPM package suitable for the CentOS platform.

Step 2: Install the MySQL RPM package

After downloading the RPM package, we can use the yum command to install it. Open a terminal window, enter the path where the RPM package is located, and run the following command to install it.

sudo yum localinstall mysql-community-release-el7-5.noarch.rpm
Copy after login

Executing this command will automatically install the official source of MySQL to facilitate subsequent installation. After the installation is complete, run the following command to install MySQL.

sudo yum update
sudo yum install mysql-server
Copy after login

After executing the above command, the MySQL database and client tools will be downloaded and installed. During the installation process, you will be asked whether to confirm the installation. Just enter y as prompted and press Enter to confirm.

Step 3: Start the MySQL service

After the MySQL installation is completed, we need to manually start the MySQL service. Open a terminal window and enter the following command:

sudo systemctl start mysqld.service
Copy after login

After executing this command, the MySQL service will start running. We can use the following command to check whether MySQL is running normally.

sudo systemctl status mysqld.service
Copy after login

After executing this command, if you can see some information about the MySQL service and the status is Active, it means that MySQL has run successfully. At this point we can use the MySQL client to connect to the MySQL database.

Step 4: Connect to the MySQL database

On the CentOS system, we can use the MySQL command line client tool to connect to the MySQL database. Open a terminal window and enter the following command to connect to the MySQL database.

mysql -u root -p
Copy after login

After executing this command, the system will prompt you to enter the MySQL root user password. After entering the password, you can successfully connect to the MySQL database. In this interface, you can enter MySQL commands to perform database operations, such as creating a database, creating a data table, inserting data, etc.

Step 5: Set MySQL to start automatically at boot

If you want the MySQL service to start automatically when the system starts, you can use the following command to set it.

sudo systemctl enable mysqld.service
Copy after login

After executing this command, the MySQL service will automatically add a startup script to ensure that the MySQL service starts automatically when the system starts.

Summary

MySQL is a powerful open source relational database management system that can be used to handle various enterprise-level applications. CentOS system is a stable and secure open source operating system that is often used in enterprises. Using the above steps, you can use the MySQL RPM package to install MySQL on a CentOS system, configure the MySQL service, and connect to the database for operations.

MySQL's Role: Databases in Web Applications MySQL's Role: Databases in Web Applications Apr 17, 2025 am 12:23 AM

The main role of MySQL in web applications is to store and manage data. 1.MySQL efficiently processes user information, product catalogs, transaction records and other data. 2. Through SQL query, developers can extract information from the database to generate dynamic content. 3.MySQL works based on the client-server model to ensure acceptable query speed.

How does MySQL index cardinality affect query performance? How does MySQL index cardinality affect query performance? Apr 14, 2025 am 12:18 AM

MySQL index cardinality has a significant impact on query performance: 1. High cardinality index can more effectively narrow the data range and improve query efficiency; 2. Low cardinality index may lead to full table scanning and reduce query performance; 3. In joint index, high cardinality sequences should be placed in front to optimize query.
