Microsoft 365 Copilot: What does it do?
Microsoft 365 Copilot was launched on March 16 at the “Future of Work with AI” event, showcasing a host of new capabilities. Let’s take a look at how to use this feature on five important 365 applications: Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
We gathered all the clues ahead of the event, and they all point to new AI features for 365 Apps. This was evident when Jared Spataro, the head of Microsoft 365, appeared alongside Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. Most attendees know in advance what they are getting into. The release of GPT-4 a few days ago is another sign.

Microfot 365 Copilot
The company announced all the features under the name “Microfot 365 Copilot” and posted a post on LinkedIn Some of the key features were showcased during the 1-hour live event. New AI capabilities have the potential to revolutionize the future, especially our working lives.
Generative AI tools share the same goal of making human lives easier. ChatGPT helps humans in many different ways and shows how artificial intelligence can be of great help, even if its current state is rather limited. However, all other companies are also trying to keep up with OpenAI and Microsoft, two companies that currently look like the industry leaders.
Word
Word is probably one of the most used Microsoft 365 apps because it has a much wider audience than some of the other apps on this list. The company says Microsoft 365 Copilot will "help you unleash creativity at work." The AI tool lets you enter text-based prompts into its pop-up window and asks you to describe what you want to create. It also has four different little boxes at the top for job descriptions, press releases, project proposals, and a general “10 ideas” box.
Additionally, you can use data from different 365 applications. For example, Microsoft used files in OneNote to create the proposal in the example above. It scans the document and generates a draft. You can also ask it to revise the draft based on your previous suggestions. Microsoft Copilot also provides you with suggestions to enhance your work. By default, Copilot will be located in the upper right corner of the application toolbar.
Excel
Excel can be complex for people who are not familiar with its formulas and general structure. You won’t face any issues with Microsoft 365 Copilot as the AI tool will handle most of the complexities through a single prompt. In his announcement video, the person shows an Excel business sales results page and asks Microsoft Copilot to analyze the data and come up with three trends.
The icon is visible in the upper right corner, and if you know what you're looking for, you obviously don't need to spend hours in front of a screen analyzing all your Excel data. It can even give you graphs based on your sales analysis, detailing how it calculated all the information you asked for.
Team
The team initially received several AI tools before the event. However, these features bring some "meh" innovations. As part of the event, Teams is getting a new "Meeting Recap" feature that lets you see summaries of meetings you weren't able to attend. If you just press the Follow button beforehand, Microsoft 365 Copilot will highlight the important parts and log the event.
If you have two meetings at the same time, you can use Copilot to "follow" one and attend the other. For further questions, please use the chat box on the right side of the screen.
Outlook
Outlook is another highly used 365 application, Copilot will help you separate important emails from other emails, helping you prioritize the most important emails . Just click the "Catch up with Copilot" button to the right of your email list and you'll see a "Start Catchup" button to use the feature.
It will also summarize long email threads on the mobile app and provide you with a draft reply, providing options to use the data from the Excel file, such as charts, as shown in the video above. "This is a productivity game changer," the company says.
Microsoft Slides Software
PowerPoint is a popular application among students and business professionals. Sometimes preparing a presentation can take hours, but with Microsoft 365 Copilot, you won't have to complain. Like some AI tools available online, it generates a PowerPoint presentation based on your prompts. You can sand and polish it as needed. If you want, it also adds more slides or makes them more visual, and even adds speaker notes for you to read during your presentation.

For example, you may want to insert multiple worksheets into your document.
