Apple working on under-screen Touch ID, expected to debut in first full-screen iPhone
Apple is continuing to work on under-display fingerprint sensor technology for iPhones with a view to reintroducing Touch ID in its first full-screen model.
Since Face ID debuted on 2017’s iPhone A unique all-in-one biometric solution.
It’s no secret that Apple has been working on a Touch ID system designed to sit beneath the display since at least 2013, and the company has been granted a number of patents over the years. However, despite claiming that future iPhones are unlikely to adopt under-screen Touch ID, Apple has stepped up research into under-screen fingerprint sensing technology.
Apple was granted a patent related to under-screen Touch ID, which combines short-wave infrared technology with an optical imaging system with multiple functions. The latest embodiments are designed not only to read the user's fingerprint when touching the display, but also to determine vein patterns, blood oxygen, pulse, and the presence of gloves and moisture.Nonetheless, recent predictions on when (if at all) under-screen Touch ID will be introduced have been pushed back. In a research report in September 2021, Kuo predicted that Apple would launch at least one new iPhone with an under-screen fingerprint scanner in the second half of 2023. But seven months later, Kuo said Apple was unlikely to release any iPhone models with under-display Touch ID in 2023 or 2024.
Apple did test an under-display fingerprint scanner for at least some iPhone 13 models, but Apple apparently decided not to move forward with the idea.
This suggests we could see a new under-screen version of Touch ID in an iPhone as early as 2026, possibly the same year Apple launches it. Both Face ID and the front-facing camera are expected to be moved below the display.
Of course, we can’t be sure if Apple will put Touch ID below the iPhone screen. It's also possible that Apple could launch an iPhone with Touch ID built into the power button, in line with the latest iPad Air and iPad mini models, but there are no rumors suggesting Apple plans to go this route.
The above is the detailed content of Apple working on under-screen Touch ID, expected to debut in first full-screen iPhone. For more information, please follow other related articles on the PHP Chinese website!

Apple's iPhone 17 may usher in a major upgrade to cope with the impact of strong competitors such as Huawei and Xiaomi in China. According to the digital blogger @Digital Chat Station, the standard version of iPhone 17 is expected to be equipped with a high refresh rate screen for the first time, significantly improving the user experience. This move marks the fact that Apple has finally delegated high refresh rate technology to the standard version after five years. At present, the iPhone 16 is the only flagship phone with a 60Hz screen in the 6,000 yuan price range, and it seems a bit behind. Although the standard version of the iPhone 17 will have a high refresh rate screen, there are still differences compared to the Pro version, such as the bezel design still does not achieve the ultra-narrow bezel effect of the Pro version. What is more worth noting is that the iPhone 17 Pro series will adopt a brand new and more
