How to execute scheduled tasks in laravel

Apr 14, 2023 am 09:16 AM

Laravel is a popular PHP framework that provides a wealth of tools and functions, one of which is scheduled tasks. In this article, we will learn how to execute scheduled tasks in Laravel.

First of all, Laravel provides a tool called "scheduler" that allows us to easily define and execute scheduled tasks. In Laravel, the scheduler uses the cron service of the operating system, so you need to ensure that the cron service has been started on the target server.

Next, we will explain step by step how to implement scheduled tasks in Laravel:

The first step is to create a scheduled task class

In Laravel, we can inherit Illuminate\Console\Scheduling\Schedule class to create a custom scheduled task class. This class must contain a method named "handle" to define the execution logic of the scheduled task. For example, we create a task class named "SendEmail" with the following code:

<?php

namespace App\Console\Commands;

use Illuminate\Console\Command;

class SendEmail extends Command
{
    protected $signature = 'email:send';

    protected $description = 'Send an email to users';

    public function handle()
    {
        // 定时任务执行的逻辑
    }
}
Copy after login

In the above example, we define a class named "SendEmail", which inherits from Laravel's Command class. In this class, we define the command "email:send" that triggers the task, and the task description that is displayed when the "php artisan list" command is run.

Second step, register scheduled tasks

In Laravel, we can use the Kernel.php file to register all scheduled tasks. This file is located in the "app/Console" directory. In this file, we can use the "schedule" method to define all tasks. For example, we want to execute the SendEmail task we just created every minute. The code is as follows:

protected function schedule(Schedule $schedule)
{
    $schedule->command('email:send')->everyMinute();
}
Copy after login

In the above example, we use the "everyMinute" method to define the SendEmail task to be executed every minute.

The third step, start the scheduled task

In Laravel, we can start the scheduler by running the following command:

* * * * * cd /path-to-your-project && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1
Copy after login
Copy after login

Then, we need to add the above command to cron table to ensure the scheduler runs within the specified time. For example, if we set the SendEmail task to be executed every minute, then we need to add the following command to the cron table:

* * * * * cd /path-to-your-project && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1
Copy after login
Copy after login

In the above example, " *" means executed once every minute.

Now, we have successfully implemented scheduled tasks in Laravel. Whether in a production environment or a development environment, Laravel's scheduled task function can help us automate some tasks, saving us time and energy.
