Face recognition using Python 'includes source code'

Python can detect and recognize your face from images or videos.

Face detection and recognition is one of the research hotspots in the field of computer vision.

The applications of face recognition include face unlocking, security protection, etc. Doctors and medical staff use face recognition to obtain medical records and medical history to better diagnose diseases.

About Python Face Recognition

In this python project, we will build a machine learning model that recognizes people from images. We used Face Recognition API and OpenCV in our project.

Project Dataset

We can use our own dataset to complete this face recognition project. For this project, let’s take the popular American web series “Friends” as the data set. This dataset is included in the facial recognition project code, which you downloaded in the previous section.

Steps to build a face recognition model

Before proceeding, let us know what face recognition and detection is.

Face recognition is the process of identifying or verifying a person's face from photos and video frames.

Face detection refers to the process of locating and extracting faces (position and size) in images for use by face detection algorithms.

Face recognition methods are used to locate uniquely specified features in an image. In most cases, facial images have been removed, cropped, scaled, and converted to grayscale. Face recognition includes three steps: face detection, feature extraction, and face recognition.

OpenCV is an open source library written in C. It contains various algorithms and implementations of deep neural networks for computer vision tasks.

1. Prepare the data set

Create 2 directories, training and testing. Choose an image for each actor from the Internet and download it to our "Train" directory. Make sure the image you choose shows the features of a human face well enough for the classifier to classify.

To test the model, let's take an image with all the casts in it and put it into our "test" directory.

For your comfort, we have added training and test data and project code.

2. Model training

First import the necessary modules.

<span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">import</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">face_recognition</span> <span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">as</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">fr</span><br><span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">import</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">cv2</span><br><span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">import</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">numpy</span> <span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">as</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">np</span><br><span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">import</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">os</span><br>

Face encoding is a vector of values that represents important measurements between facial features, such as the distance between the eyes, the width of the forehead, etc.

We loop through each image in the train directory, extract the name of the person in the image, calculate their face encoding vector, and store the information in the corresponding list.

3. Test the model in the test data set

As mentioned before, our test data set only contains one image containing all people.

Use the CV2 imread() method to read the test image.

The face recognition library provides a useful method called Face_Locations(), which locates the coordinates (left, bottom, right, top) of each face detected in the image. Using these position values we can easily find the face encoding.

<span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">face_locations</span> <span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">=</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">fr</span>.<span style="color: rgb(0, 92, 197); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">face_locations</span>(<span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">image</span>)<br><span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">face_encodings</span> <span style="color: rgb(215, 58, 73); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">=</span> <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">fr</span>.<span style="color: rgb(0, 92, 197); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">face_encodings</span>(<span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">image</span>, <span style="color: rgb(89, 89, 89); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background: none 0% 0% / auto repeat scroll padding-box border-box rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">face_locations</span>)<br>

We loop over each facial location and its encoding in the image. We then compare this encoding to the encoding of faces in the Train dataset.

Then calculate the face distance, that is, calculate the similarity between the test image encoding and the training image encoding. Now, we pick the minimum distance from it, indicating that this face in the test image is one of the people in the training dataset.

Now, use the methods in the CV2 module to draw a rectangle with the facial position coordinates.
