A brief analysis of JavaScript access object properties and methods and their differences_javascript skills

May 16, 2016 pm 03:32 PM

Attribute is a variable used to represent the characteristics of an object, such as color, size, weight, etc.; method is a function used to represent the operation of the object, such as running, breathing, jumping, etc.

In JavaScript, the "." operator is usually used to access the value of an object's properties. Or use [] as an associative array to access the properties of the object.

The properties and methods of an object are collectively called members of the object.

Accessing the properties of an object

In JavaScript, you can use "." and "[]" to access the properties of an object.

1. Use "." to access object properties

Syntax:

objectName.propertyName

Among them, objectName is the object name and propertyName is the property name.

2. Use "[ ]" to access object properties

Syntax:

objectName[propertyName]

Among them, objectName is the object name and propertyName is the property name.

Methods to access objects

In JavaScript, you can only use "." to access the methods of an object.

Syntax:

objectName.methodName()

Among them, objectName is the object name and methodName() is the function name.

[Example 5-1] Create a Person class:

function Person() {
  this.name=" 张三 "; // 定义一个属性 name
  this.sex=" 男 "; // 定义一个属性 sex
  this.age=22; // 定义一个属性 age
  this.say=function(){ // 定义一个方法 say()
    return "嗨!大家好,我的名字是 " + this.name + " ,性别是 " + this.sex + ",今年 " + this.age +"岁!";
  }
}
var zhangsan=new Person();
alert("姓名:"+zhangsan.name); // 使用“.”来访问对象属性
alert("性别:"+zhangsan.sex);
alert("年龄:"+zhangsan["age"]); // 使用“[ ]”来访问对象属性
alert(zhangsan.say);  // 使用“.”来访问对象方法
Copy after login

PS: A brief analysis of the difference between the "." and "[]" methods of object access properties

In JavaScript, the "." operator is usually used to access the value of an object's properties. Or use [] as an associative array to access the properties of the object. But what is the difference between these two methods?

For example, read the property attribute value in object:

object.property

  object['property']

Both of the above two methods can achieve attribute access.

1. Differences in grammar

The attribute name of the object in dot notation is an identifier, while the attribute name of the latter is a string.

2. The difference in flexibility

In JavaScript programming, you can create any number of properties for an object. But when using the "." operator to access the properties of an object, the property name is represented by an identifier. In a JavaScript program, identifiers must be entered literally; they are not a data type, so the program cannot operate on them. That is, identifiers are static and must be hardcoded in the program.

When using the array[] notation to access the attributes of an object, the attribute name is represented by a string. Strings are a JavaScript data type, so they can be manipulated and created while the program is running.

3. Performance differences

Array[] notation will perform expression operation when accessing attribute values. The dot representation directly accesses attribute values, and theoretically the execution efficiency will be higher than that of the array representation. Performance can actually be ignored.

Some scenarios must use array representation to dynamically access attribute values, which cannot be achieved with dot representation.

In general, there is not much difference between these two methods, and both have corresponding usage scenarios. Dot notation is generally used as a static object to access properties. The array representation is very useful when accessing attributes dynamically.

The Evolution of JavaScript: Current Trends and Future Prospects The Evolution of JavaScript: Current Trends and Future Prospects Apr 10, 2025 am 09:33 AM

The latest trends in JavaScript include the rise of TypeScript, the popularity of modern frameworks and libraries, and the application of WebAssembly. Future prospects cover more powerful type systems, the development of server-side JavaScript, the expansion of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the potential of IoT and edge computing.

JavaScript Engines: Comparing Implementations JavaScript Engines: Comparing Implementations Apr 13, 2025 am 12:05 AM

Different JavaScript engines have different effects when parsing and executing JavaScript code, because the implementation principles and optimization strategies of each engine differ. 1. Lexical analysis: convert source code into lexical unit. 2. Grammar analysis: Generate an abstract syntax tree. 3. Optimization and compilation: Generate machine code through the JIT compiler. 4. Execute: Run the machine code. V8 engine optimizes through instant compilation and hidden class, SpiderMonkey uses a type inference system, resulting in different performance performance on the same code.

Python vs. JavaScript: The Learning Curve and Ease of Use Python vs. JavaScript: The Learning Curve and Ease of Use Apr 16, 2025 am 12:12 AM

Python is more suitable for beginners, with a smooth learning curve and concise syntax; JavaScript is suitable for front-end development, with a steep learning curve and flexible syntax. 1. Python syntax is intuitive and suitable for data science and back-end development. 2. JavaScript is flexible and widely used in front-end and server-side programming.

JavaScript: Exploring the Versatility of a Web Language JavaScript: Exploring the Versatility of a Web Language Apr 11, 2025 am 12:01 AM

JavaScript is the core language of modern web development and is widely used for its diversity and flexibility. 1) Front-end development: build dynamic web pages and single-page applications through DOM operations and modern frameworks (such as React, Vue.js, Angular). 2) Server-side development: Node.js uses a non-blocking I/O model to handle high concurrency and real-time applications. 3) Mobile and desktop application development: cross-platform development is realized through ReactNative and Electron to improve development efficiency.

From C/C to JavaScript: How It All Works From C/C to JavaScript: How It All Works Apr 14, 2025 am 12:05 AM

The shift from C/C to JavaScript requires adapting to dynamic typing, garbage collection and asynchronous programming. 1) C/C is a statically typed language that requires manual memory management, while JavaScript is dynamically typed and garbage collection is automatically processed. 2) C/C needs to be compiled into machine code, while JavaScript is an interpreted language. 3) JavaScript introduces concepts such as closures, prototype chains and Promise, which enhances flexibility and asynchronous programming capabilities.

JavaScript and the Web: Core Functionality and Use Cases JavaScript and the Web: Core Functionality and Use Cases Apr 18, 2025 am 12:19 AM

The main uses of JavaScript in web development include client interaction, form verification and asynchronous communication. 1) Dynamic content update and user interaction through DOM operations; 2) Client verification is carried out before the user submits data to improve the user experience; 3) Refreshless communication with the server is achieved through AJAX technology.
