About two years ago, I made a decision to learn programming. I bought a ElaborationPHP book and started reading and doing the exercises in it. I put my main focus on PHP and ignore any other languages, because I have a habit that once we start to do something, we will concentrate all our attention on it and finish it first, and then Go do other things. So, I tried to develop a Webapplication(A wonderful idea, an application that can make me become another Facebookfounder). Little by little, the progress is very slow, and my application(This application that is about to make me a millionaire) is slowly taking shape. Finally, it ran. Naturally, no one uses it, it’s so poorly made, and there are bugs everywhere. Then I had another (wonderful) idea. I think this time I don’t have to keep flipping through books, and I don’t have to search and copy codes on google all night long, and modify them so that they can run in my application. I thought I could just sit down and write my PHP application. But I finally realized that I actually learned nothing, even though I read a lot about PHP, even though I had developed an application ( sucks, but it’s also a ) . I realized that all I had done during this entire period was learn a little bit of PHP syntax, use a few pieces of code to solve a difficult problem, and the patchwork of code ended up changing my application beyond recognition.
I was very angry and stopped all development. I completely forgot about my Webapp idea and started browsing around for all the development knowledge I found interesting. I discovered Ruby On Rails, this thing looks cool, but I don’t know why it is cool, I don’t know anything about ruby, but I spent a lot of time learning Ruby On Rails, then I learned to develop Android applications and read information related to it, which led me to learning Java, but I didn’t stop learning Rails, I’m iTunesU reported a Java course, and then when I was working, I started reading the PDF version of the Pythontextbook, because of something in Python Piqued my interest....(maybe that's the name). oh! I also have a C++ book, I found it out, and before going to bed I started to read some C++ knowledge. Since I still don't know the language Ruby, I started learning Ruby too. When I got bored of studying Java, I also tried Objective-C, and JavaScript looked good too, and I tried to master it. These are all happening at the same time.
If someone had asked me before, I would definitely say that this is the worst way to learn programming. But it turns out that this is the most effective way to learn. The result of this learning method is that I finally stopped paying attention to the syntax of PHP and started to connect the similarities between different languages. I'm actually learning the principles now, instead of searching for the correct syntax on google just to do something. I started to understand how similar things looked different in different languages and different platforms. These realizations were important to me. My focus is no longer PHP, my focus is now programming.
