New York Times Connections game Monday, May 12th, Tips and Answers

Hello everyone, connecters! A new week has begun.

We have a small tradition here, playing a cheerful song at the beginning of every Monday column, hoping to make everyone move, relax their body and mind, and release some endorphins.

This week, we will be back in 2012 to listen to the songs of two Canadian idols. "Closer" is one of Tegan and Sara's most popular songs, a dynamic dance-pop:

Before we start, we have a great Discord community where we discuss the New York Times Connections, other New York Times games and all sorts of other things. Everyone who joined was friendly, it was a relaxing and pleasant place to communicate, and everyone was welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about columns, especially when I make mistakes (or not always). I don't read much about comments or tweets. You can also read my weekend version of the column in my new newsletter Pastimes.

Here are the tips and answers for the New York Times Connections game on Monday, May 12.

How to play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. A new puzzle is updated every day at midnight. You can play on the New York Times website or on the gaming app.

You will see a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four four-character groups by finding out the connections between them. These groups can be such as items you can click on, the name of the study participant, or words that start with a body part, etc.

There is only one solution for each puzzle, and you need to be careful when dealing with words that may fit multiple categories. You can rearrange words and maybe help you see the connection between them.

Each group has a color code. The yellow group is usually the easiest to untie, the blue and green are centered, and the purple group is usually the hardest. Purple groups usually involve word games.

Select the four words you think are together and press Submit. If you guessed it wrong, you will lose a life. If you are close to getting a correct group, you may see a message telling you that you are only one word away from the correct answer, but you still need to find out which word needs to be exchanged.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let's make sure this doesn't happen with the help of some tips, and today's Connections answer will help, too, if you're really having trouble. Like Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have a New York Times All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive for the publication. This includes all previous Connections games, so you can go back and play any game you missed.

In addition to the initial 60 games or so, if you need a prompt, you should be able to find my prompt via Google! Just click here and add the game date you need to have the clue or answer in your search query.

What is the Connections prompt today?

Scroll slowly! After each group's prompt, I'll reveal what those groups are, without telling you immediately which words belong to them.

Today's 16 words are...

  • VISIT
  • BANK
  • WALLET
  • HIT
  • SMACK
  • ATM
  • CASH REGISTER
  • BOUNCE
  • CLICK
  • TIP JAR
  • PURSE
  • CAROM
  • CURL
  • PAGE VIEW
  • RICOCHET
  • PUCKER

The prompt for today's Connections group is:

  • Yellow set – the side of the sofa and your back pocket can be placed here
  • Green Group – Shortly after the breakup, you may find a new partner
  • Blue Group – You will see these in a situation where transportation is allowed
  • Purple Group – To keep it clean, let’s ignore some other viable options

What is the Connections group today?

Need more help?

Note: We start to enter the spoiler area .

Today's Connections group is...

  • Yellow Group – Where to find banknotes
  • Green Group - Rebound
  • Blue Group – Things tracked by network analysis
  • Purple Group – Things You Can Do with Your Lips

What is the answer to Connections today?

Spoiler warning! Don't scroll down the page until you're ready to find today's Connections answer.

This is your last warning!

Today's Connections answer is...

  • Yellow Group - Where to find banknotes (ATM, CASH REGISTER, TIP JAR, WALLET)
  • Green Group-BANK, BOUNCE, CAROM, RICOCHET
  • Blue Group - Things tracked by network analysis (CLICK, HIT, PAGE VIEW, VISIT)
  • Purple Group – Things You Can Do with Your Lips (CURL, PUCKER, PURSE, SMACK)

I almost reversed the rainbow twice in a row, but I got the yellow and green order wrong. What a pity! Despite this, my winning streak reached 76 games. My performance is as follows:

?????
?????
?????
?????

I don't know what CAROM means, so I let it go from the beginning. PUCKER attracted me first because that's something you can do with your lips. I quickly found the other three words of the purple group.

I think PAGE VIEW may have something to do with counters (hey, remember those old Geocities sites that everyone has?), which makes sense with BANK and CASH REGISTER, but that doesn't quite fit together. When I looked around, I realized I was going in the wrong direction because VISIT and HIT make sense with PAGE VIEW. The same goes for VISIT, which led me to find the blue group.

Since then, it has been quite simple. Yellow groups are easy to put together, because BANK obviously has to be used with other groups. The rest is the green group. It turns out that CAROM is a way to hit a ball in billiards where the club hits two different target balls, or just a term that refers to something that bounces from the surface. It is also the name of a seed used as a spice.

That's all about today's Connections clues and answers. If you need it, be sure to check out my blog tomorrow for tips and solutions for Tuesday’s game.

Appendix: I'm not sure which song to play today. I have a few other songs in my mind, but they don't quite fit the cheerful theme of Monday (and I can't stop listening to Electric Callboy).

So I turned to the super playlist I trusted and after clicking the shuffle button three times, I found a suitable song. You can't really be wrong, LCD Soundsystem:

I wish you a happy day! Drink more water! Call your lover!
