How to Prepare Your iPhone for iOS 18
Get ready for iOS 18! Apple will release iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 software updates on Monday, September 16. The new system brings exciting new features, customization options and performance improvements. Before updating the device, be sure to make the following preparations:
1. Check device compatibility:
iOS 18 has certain requirements for device models. The following iPhone models support iOS 18 updates:
- All iPhone 16 models
- All iPhone 15 models
- All iPhone 14 models
- All iPhone 13 models
- All iPhone 12 models
- All iPhone 11 models
- All iPhone XS models
- iPhone XR
- iPhone SE (second generation)
"All models" include the Basic, Plus, Pro and Pro Max versions (if any).
2. Clean up storage space:
Before large-scale system updates, it is recommended to clean up the device storage space. Delete infrequently used apps, extra media files, and application caches (video players and podcast apps are usually cached at large). Installing iOS 18 requires at least 16GB of free space. You can check storage usage by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
3. Update the application:
Most app developers are ready for iOS 18. Please update your app to ensure compatibility with the new system and take full advantage of new features. Go to the App Store, click on your profile picture, and scroll to the Updates section to update.
4. Backup your iPhone:
Before installing any major system updates, it is crucial to back up your iPhone or iPad. Backups can prevent data loss due to problems during the update process. You can choose iCloud backup and local backup (such as backing up to a Mac or Windows computer) to improve data security. Local backups are also convenient for you to downgrade to iOS 17 if you need it.
5. Start installing iOS 18!
After confirming that the device is compatible, cleaning up storage space, updating apps and backup is complete, you can install iOS 18! Starting Monday, you can download and install iOS 18 in Settings > General > Software Updates.
