Perplexity AI Brings More Artificial Intelligence Tools to Mac

May 11, 2025 am 10:36 AM

Mac users now have another native AI assistant choice—the Perplexity Mac version app.

Perplexity provides a free AI-driven answer engine that uses multiple models, including GPT-4o and Claude 3, and best of all, it will cite sources in the answers, making it easier for you to confirm independently or further study the answers.

Another advantage of Perplexity Mac is that it only requires macOS Ventura 13 or higher, providing another native AI option for Mac users who have not upgraded to macOS Sequoia (it is worth remembering that you can also use ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI tools over the web page on almost any operating system, and you can also run Llama LLM locally on your Mac (including running uncensored models if you don't want bias).

To get started, you can get the free Perplexity app for Mac from the Mac App Store (it can also be found on their Github, but it's tedious to download apps from Github for non-professional geeks like me).

  • Get Perplexity for free from the App Store (or, you can get it from Github).

The Perplexity app runs on a Mac in a simple application window and can be accessed through keyboard shortcuts, Docks, or menu bars.

Users can use the Perplexity desktop app on their Mac without logging in, account or paid account , though you can pay $20 per month to get additional features such as the ability to upload and analyze images and files, and create an account if you prefer.

The free version of Perplexity offers five "professional" searches, but in my own tests, once more than five professional searches, the response and results are still good, and I can hardly see the difference between the two, which makes the free version enough for most users.

Another advantage of Perplexity is that it directly quotes sources, which is arguably the weakest part of ChatGPT (besides the obvious bias that it and all AI systems are currently being trained), so while I personally still prefer ChatGPT and really like its Mac client, Perplexity is also a good choice.

Whether you love AI, hate it or be totally indifferent, it almost doesn't matter because it's here now, it's helpful to understand how to use these tools to understand this technology and to many people they do work for them. If you haven't tried any AI tools, they're built into Apple's operating systems for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1 and later, and will only continue to evolve, but even if your device is incompatible with Apple Intelligence and these operating systems, you can still access powerful AI capabilities using apps and services like Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and more.

What do you think about Perplexity Mac? Do you have your preferred AI tool or use case? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
