How to Downgrade from iOS 18 Back to iOS 17
Regretting your iOS 18 upgrade? Don't worry, downgrading to iOS 17 is still possible (for now!). This guide explains how, but remember, Apple may stop signing iOS 17.7 soon, so act fast!
Before You Begin:
- Crucial Backup: iOS 18 backups are incompatible with iOS 17. You must have an iOS 17.7 backup to restore your data. Otherwise, your device will be wiped clean.
- Tools: A Mac or PC, a USB cable, and an internet connection are required.
- IPSW File: Download the correct iOS 17.7/iPadOS 17.7 IPSW file for your device model. Numerous online resources provide these.
Downgrading via Recovery Mode (Data Loss Possible):
This method is the easiest but erases your device.
- Download IPSW: Obtain the appropriate iOS 17.7 IPSW file.
- Connect: Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer.
- Open Finder/iTunes: Launch Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC).
- Restore: Hold down the OPTION/ALT key and click "Restore." Select your downloaded IPSW file.
- Wait: The restore process will take some time.
- Setup: Once complete, your device will boot into iOS 17.7. Restore from your backup (if available) or set up as new.
Downgrade Failed? Try Recovery Mode:
If the downgrade fails, put your device into Recovery Mode:
- Connect: Connect your device to your computer.
- Recovery Mode: Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Power/Lock button until the recovery mode screen appears.
- Retry: Your computer should detect your device in recovery mode. Repeat the downgrade process.
