How to Re-Enable Slow Motion Effects on MacOS
Senior Mac users may remember that previously, by holding down the Shift key, it was possible to slow down the window to minimize and maximize animation speed, as well as other animation effects such as turning on Launchpad or using Mission Control. Some of the cool animations in the early Mac system date back to earlier versions of Mac OS X (some of them were reported as early as 2007!), but in later macOS development, Apple removed the optional slow-mo feature. However, just use some defaults commands and you can re-enable the slow motion effect on macOS, even in the latest macOS Sequoia versions.
How to enable slow motion effects on macOS
To re-enable optional slow motion effects on macOS, just follow these steps:
- Open the terminal application and enter the following command:
defaults write com.apple.dock slow-motion-allowed -bool YES;killall Dock
- Press Enter, the Dock will restart and the slow motion effect will be enabled again.
- Now, when clicking on Minimize Window, Maximize Window, Open Launchpad, activate Mission Control, and use other Mac-like features with animation effects, hold down the Shift key – the effect will appear in slow motion.
The slow motion effects applied to animations are all for visual effects and have no obvious practical uses, but it's fun.
Remember that the slow motion effect will only take effect when you activate features with additional animations (such as minimizing/maximizing windows, opening Mission Control, opening Launchpad, and similar features). The slow motion effect is not always enabled (although there was a trick to enable slow motion permanently, most Mac users wouldn't find it that ideal because it's very slow), and will only be enabled when using the Shift key modifier.
It's a fun and relatively simple trick that some senior Mac users might like, and it reminds people of early versions of macOS, when the OS was more fun and fun were incorporated into it.
Thanks to daringfireball for pointing out this clever trick for modern macOS versions.
