Apple Maps welcomes the blessing of hiking enthusiasts! New features on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia 15 allow you to easily plan and manage hiking trails. Not only are there access to thousands of detailed trail maps and terrain views of the U.S. National Parks, it also creates custom walking and hiking trails.

Custom walking and hiking trails feature has been available on iPhone, iPad and Mac since September 16, and can be easily created from hiking in state or local parks to strolls in towns and even any path you want to record. You can customize the name of the route, add notes, and mark it as one-way, round trip or closed-loop routes, etc. On your iPhone or iPad, you can also download custom routes for offline use.

Step 2: Mark your route point

If you are starting with a marked location or walking route, the starting point already exists; if you are starting with a location library, you will need to manually mark the starting point. To mark a route point, click or click where you want until you reach the end of the custom route. Route points can be roads, paths, businesses, landmarks, and other locations. You can click the "Undo" button to undo the marking point, or click the "Path" button to view the overall situation of the current route.

Step 3: Select the route option

After planning the route, you can further customize:

First, you can reverse the route; click or click the start or end point on the path, then click the Invert Route or use the Invert button on the editing panel. You will notice the positions of the start and end points interchange, the direction arrows on the path change, and the elevation chart also flips horizontally.

By default, your route is a one-way route, but you can classify it as a round trip route, which changes the original end point to a rebate and coincides with the starting point. The direction arrow on the path will become a bidirectional arrow, the elevation chart will contain the return route, and the distance and time will be adjusted accordingly.

To make a change, click or click the start or end point on the path and click the Round Trip or use the Round Trip button on the editing panel.

You can also classify routes as closed-loop routes, which makes your starting point the same as your end point. To select this option, click or click the start or end point on the path and click Closed Loop or use the Closed Loop button on the editing panel. If you have manually closed the loop, you won't notice any big changes, but if not, the map will choose the most reasonable route to close the loop for you.
