NVIDIA Shield TV 9.2.1 Update: 120FPS Games and Numerous Fixes

All NVIDIA Shield TV devices will receive a major update – version 9.2.1, which brings a 120FPS gaming experience on GeForce NOW and various bug fixes.

This update fixes many issues such as Plex playback, connectivity issues, Dolby Vision lag, and improves performance, stability and support for third-party remote controls.

Despite the many streaming boxes and adapters available on the market, the NVIDIA Shield TV is still one of my favorites. If you're still using an older Shield, then good news is here! NVIDIA just released another update with many fixes and improvements.

The first NVIDIA Shield TV streaming devices were born over a decade ago, and NVIDIA is still improving them. However, many recent updates are optional (such as the February update), which means many users missed bug fixes or changes. Thankfully, NVIDIA has confirmed that the new Shield Experience 9.2.1 update will be available for all users this week, and it is a big update. The following is the update:

NVIDIA Shield Experience 9.2.1 Update

This week, all NVIDIA Shield TV devices will receive major updates, upgraded to the latest 9.2.1 system version, with new audio features such as 120FPS gaming on GeForce NOW, numerous bug fixes, and new audio features such as AURO-3D. You don't need to select manually, updates will arrive automatically. Of course, users can also manually go to settings and check for updates to get updates immediately.

I've been looking forward to this new update as it fixes countless bugs on the device. For example, NVIDIA fixed issues that caused Dolby Vision content delays and stutters, Plex playback issues, connectivity issues, and various other minor issues. You can view the full update log, but here are the important parts:

Error fixes and changes:

  • Supports streaming games at 120FPS on NVIDIA GeForce NOW at resolutions up to 1080p.
  • Fixed an issue where night mode was skipped when DAP was enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where Dolby Vision content was stuttered when frame matching is enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where matching content audio resolution was matched when using USB DAC.
  • Restored the HQS/Maxrate option for USB audio.
  • Fixed a USB TV tuner issue in Live Channel app.
  • Fixed a playback issue in PLEX when using AAC 5.1 audio.
  • Fixed connection issues with third-party remote controls after hibernation or restart.
  • This update unlocks full support for playing high-resolution immersive sounds in AURO-3D via HDMI.
  • Fixed an issue where Bose and Sony headphones were stuck when connected to 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi.
  • Fixed audio stuttering in headphones supported by aptx.
  • Fixed an issue with AV synchronization when Dolby processing is enabled.
  • Fixed a crash when volume changes.
  • Fixed an issue where Apple Music was damaged during screen projection.
  • Fixed an issue where Spotify plays empty when matching audio content resolution when enabling stereo upmix.
  • And more.

The full update log details other enhancements and some known issues and provides more details for users who are still using Shield TV. That said, we've seen some reports on Reddit that an earlier 9.2 update caused a startup loop, so we'll keep an eye on whether anyone has a similar issue in this release.

Remember that HD gaming streaming is not a new feature, and NVIDIA adds 4K support in 2022. However, being able to play games at 120FPS at 1080p resolution is a good addition. I've also had problems with a third-party remote, so I'll try to fix it soon.

Shield TV devices are expensive for a reason: they are powerful, feature-rich, and last longer than most devices on the market. If you have never selected an update or have not received this version, check your device immediately. Again, this update applies to all NVIDIA Shield TV devices.
