The arcade game Starwing Paradox, developed by Byking (creators of Gundam Extreme Versus), with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and mecha designs by Ippei Gyoubu, was a captivating experience. Its innovative, motion-controlled arcade cabinet and detailed controls made it stand out. While I covered the game extensively upon its 2018 Japanese release, its limited audience led to the closure of online servers in 2021.

This makes the upcoming prequel film, As One, a curious proposition. It seems Square Enix envisioned a broader media campaign for Starwing Paradox, with the anime movie serving as a key promotional element. However, production delays have resulted in its release only now, long after the game's demise.

While As One retains the talents of Sadamoto and Gyoubu, the absence of the game significantly alters its context. The new trailer (embedded below) is promising, despite somewhat simplistic background art, but the question remains: who is the target audience for a prequel to a defunct game?
