Defining The Ill-Defined Meaning Of Elusive AGI Via The Helpful Assistance Of AI Itself
The challenge of defining Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is significant. Claims of AGI progress often lack a clear benchmark, with definitions tailored to fit pre-determined research directions. This article explores a novel approach to defining AGI, leveraging the power of generative AI itself.
This analysis is part of an ongoing series exploring AI advancements and complexities.
The Pursuit of AGI and ASI
Research aims to achieve AGI, AI comparable to human intelligence, or even Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), surpassing human intellect. While AGI remains elusive, the timeline for its achievement is highly debated and lacks concrete evidence. ASI is even further beyond our current capabilities.
Defining the Allusive AGI
The lack of a universally accepted AGI definition hinders research comparisons. Different studies employ varying definitions, making direct comparisons difficult. A universal standard is urgently needed, though even a standard definition of conventional AI remains elusive.
A Sampling of AGI Definitions
Existing AGI definitions vary widely. For instance:
- "A highly autonomous system...able to learn to perform as broad a range of tasks as a human...at least at the same level of ability as the average human."
- "AGI is a computer that is capable of solving human solvable problems, but not necessarily in human-like ways."
- "We use AGI to refer to systems that demonstrate broad capabilities of intelligence...at or above human-level."
These examples highlight the need for a concise, universally understood definition.
An Experiment in AGI Definition
To address this, twenty AGI definitions from recent research papers were analyzed. Instead of selecting one, an experiment was conducted using four leading LLMs (ChatGPT, GPT-4-o, Llama 3.3, and Claude 3). Each LLM was prompted to generate both short and long AGI definitions based on the provided twenty.
The AI-Aided Consensus
The four short definitions were then fed back into the LLMs, which produced a second set of short definitions. Finally, the LLMs ranked these eight short definitions. Remarkably, all four LLMs unanimously ranked the following definition as the best:
"AGI refers to an autonomous system capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge across a broad range of tasks and environments, including unfamiliar ones, with adaptability and generalization comparable to or exceeding that of humans. It demonstrates flexible cognitive abilities such as reasoning, planning, and problem-solving beyond narrow or pre-specified domains."
This consensus suggests a potential candidate for a universally accepted AGI definition. However, the philosophical question of how to determine the "best" definition remains, given the absence of a pre-existing standard. The LLMs' pragmatic approach, however, provides a valuable starting point for the ongoing discussion.
