REPO Avant-Garde Guide: Challenges and Opportunities of Art Museums
REPO's latest level, Avant-Garde, also known as the "museum" by players, brings the game's largest update to date. Unlike the unique features of other levels, the Avant-garde level is known for its unique open large room design. This article will share some tips to help you effectively explore avant-garde levels and deal with potential dangers.
The basics of the avant-garde level
The name of the Avant-garde level comes from the settings of its Art Museum. Unlike other levels (as of this writing), the Avant-garde level consists primarily of large open rooms. While the rooms are not empty, walls, benches and showcases provide some cover to deal with lurking enemies and search for cyborgs, the rooms at the Avant-garde level are more open than the narrow corridors and numerous corners commonly found in other maps.
Players will find that most items are placed like displays; to collect loot, you need to check the various platforms and shelves around the museum (remember, new items are also added to the game, so not all items you can collect for tax collectors must be familiar). Items may also appear in less obvious and difficult to reach; during testing, the team found objects hidden high in an art installation that looked like a square tower that connected to each other. As with all levels, keep a close eye on anything that looks like it can climb. The game provides a good chance of generating loot anywhere you can enter, even if it takes some effort to get there.
As the levels advance, the complexity of the avant-garde maps will also increase (as is true for all maps), and upper floors, ventilation systems you can walk through, and rooms with holes that you need to be careful about. These more complex map layouts may contain some small areas that are slightly less open than earlier layouts, but the level is still much more open than any other level type.
Threats to deal with
One of the main threats in the avant-garde level is the "Joker". While Joker is a rather tricky enemy in any level, given the layout of the Avant-garde level, the Joker’s powerful laser beam can easily sweep through a lot of space. The spacious room cannot effectively block the laser beam, and the rooms are connected by large flat arched openings instead of actual doors. This means that the emitted laser beam can easily affect multiple rooms as it sweeps through. Similarly, for similar reasons, the Hunter is another deadly opponent in the open space with his keen hearing and deadly accurate shooting. In the avant-garde level, it is much more difficult to continuously block the shooting line of the "hunter" than other levels of the game.
Another threat to be aware of is the “peeper.” This ominous eyeball usually doesn’t cause a major problem, but the museum’s open layout once again changes the dynamics you may have become accustomed to in other levels. "Pepsiker" usually finds cyborgs from a distance than normal, and cover may not be as easy to obtain; in avant-garde levels, it is especially important to try to remember the location of the cover (such as showcases and benches) in your mind so that you can try to move there and block the "Pepsiker"'s view. If you have trouble recalling any near objects that can be exploited, another way is to quickly run to the walls of the room and try to find the large flat arched passageway that leaves the "Peeper". The problem with this strategy is that "peepers" can often see the depths of adjacent rooms. But once you enter a new room, you can move at least to either side of the arch to break its sight continuously (if not quickly).
Hiding is also more challenging for enemies who rely on melee attacks. Importantly, most enemies can perform melee attacks anywhere you can crouch, but they also do relatively clumsy. If you are in trouble and don't have enough stamina to run, it's usually still a good strategy to hide under cover. You just need to keep moving, use cover more to block enemies and possibly force them into their cover attack animations, rather than just hiding under the cover they see you hiding and letting them attack you.
It is also worth noting that there are some weird items in the Avant-garde level that may be difficult to handle properly. The “radio” causes you to nod your head up and down quickly when you hold it, while the “giant blender” grinds the money in it while you hold it, destroying its own value (which means you need to throw it into the CART as soon as possible).
Finally, as mentioned before, the Avant-garde level may eventually generate rooms containing deadly traps. Most of the time, the risks of these rooms will be very obvious and can be easily handled by moving carefully and making sure you don’t rush. If the enemy puts too much pressure on you and you are in danger, don't be afraid to give up your items (even let them fall into a trap) if the other option is death.
Advantages of the Pioneer Level
As a level, one will notice that the avant-garde level plays very differently than the rest of the game. Its openness can be a problem when facing certain enemies, but loot is often easy to find, and moving around (when you are not trying to avoid monsters). While the level can certainly still feel weird and surreal, it’s easy to sweep through a room, find basically everything, and head to the next location you haven’t explored yet. If you check the map after you do the final loot extraction, you will also rarely have a hard time returning to the truck.
In addition to adapting to how enemies act in levels, the main thing to remember in avant-garde levels is to pay attention to items hidden high. This is a level suitable for navigation items and upgrades, especially the "Extra Jump" upgrade. If you play with the team, you should also remember that the “tumble” action can allow other teammates to pick you up. This allows them to move you to places you usually can’t reach on your own.
