Enable Spatial Audio on Your Pixel Smartphone for Surround Sound Everywhere You Go
Experience immersive audio with the latest Pixel smartphone feature: Spatial Audio! This innovative technology creates a home theater experience in your pocket, making your streaming videos and music more captivating than ever before. Sound appears to emanate from both in front of and behind you, significantly enhancing your listening experience.
This Google audio feature is compatible with all connected headphones, including wired headphones (USB-C or with a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter) and Bluetooth headphones. Pixel Buds Pro users also benefit from head tracking, dynamically adjusting the audio perspective based on your phone's position. Note that head tracking currently only works on Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 7, and 7 Pro models.
Static Spatial Audio surround sound is available on Pixel 4, 4XL, 4a, 4a 5G, 5, 5a, 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, and 7 Pro models. However, it requires the January 2023 Android 13 security patch (builds TQ1A.230105.001, TQ1A.230105.002, TQ1A.230105.001.A2, and TQ1A.230105.001.B1). Follow the steps below to update your device or skip ahead if your device is already updated.
Step 1: Update to the Latest Android Version
The January 2023 security update, released January 3rd, introduces Spatial Audio support for compatible Pixel phones. To update, navigate to Settings -> System -> System Update. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions. After the device restarts, verify the updated version in Settings -> About Phone.
Step 2: Activate Spatial Audio
Once updated, go to Settings -> Sound & Vibration -> Spatial Audio. Enable the feature for wired headphones via the toggle switch.
For wireless headphones, select "Connect device settings," then locate your accessory and enable Spatial Audio via the settings cog. Head tracking (Pixel Buds Pro only) can also be enabled here, although a separate firmware update will be required (arriving in the coming weeks). Check for updates at More Settings -> Firmware Update.
Step 3: Enjoy Enhanced Audio
Spatial Audio enhances media supporting Dolby Audio or 5.1 surround sound. Compatible streaming services include Netflix, Hulu, Disney , Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Google TV, YouTube TV, Paramount , Peacock, Sling TV, and AT&T Now. For music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal are supported.
