Use “Type to Siri” on Mac Easier Than Ever in Sequoia
The significant improvements in Siri in the latest version of macOS are largely due to its integration with ChatGPT. Another improvement is that the “Type to use Siri” feature is more convenient to access, no longer requiring separate accessibility settings like the older macOS system software.
In macOS Sequoia 15 and later, you can access "Type to use Siri" anywhere on your Mac with a simple key combination. If you haven't used this feature on your Mac yet, take a moment to learn about it and give it a try.
How to use "Type to use Siri" on your Mac
You need macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later to use this feature, and for best use, you also need a Mac with Apple chip for Apple Intelligence support.
- anywhere on your Mac, press the Command key twice in a row to bring up Type to use Siri.
- Type your request, query, or command, and press Enter.
- If Siri cannot process the request directly, it may ask if you want to use ChatGPT instead.
- If applicable, the Siri interface will provide a reply to ChatGPT:
The “Type to use Siri” experience in macOS is improved over the past, but it is not perfect. Siri is still unusually slow at times and strangely unable to answer some simple questions.
In the sample screenshot, Siri is able to answer simple questions about insects, but when asked when the next full moon is (this information is found in the weather app on Mac), it cannot provide that information unless consulting ChatGPT.
When Siri cannot answer queries successfully, it usually ends up asking if you want to use ChatGPT instead. Given that ChatGPT is a more powerful, faster, and more advanced AI tool than Siri, you may simply get the ChatGPT app for Mac (or iPhone or iPad) to access ChatGPT faster and more directly. Of course, you can always use ChatGPT over the network as well. But for those who want to stay in the Apple ecosystem, the “Type to use Siri” feature (on Macs with Apple chips) now provides a way to use ChatGPT directly in macOS.
Remember that Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT support is only available for Mac hardware equipped with Apple chips (indicated by M series chips such as M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M80000, Pro, Max, etc.). Given that Siri simply calls ChatGPT and then passes the information provided by ChatGPT back to the Mac, and ChatGPT is basically available in any web browser, it is a bit disappointing to have such strict hardware requirements on Apple Intelligence, but Apple makes these decisions based on considerations that various users are not always satisfied or even unaware.
What do you think about the new shortcut key combination that activates Type to use Siri? What do you think of the Type to Use Siri feature on your Mac? Are you using this feature, or are you just using the ChatGPT application directly? Please share your experiences and thoughts in the comments.
