Touch Bar on Mac Showing “Touch ID to Sign In” or “Touch ID to Autofill” Requests in Safari? Here’s Why

May 08, 2025 am 09:12 AM

MacBook Pro users equipped with a touch bar may frequently encounter seemingly random "autofill with Touch ID" or "login with Touch ID" requests pop up when using Safari browser, even if the current web page does not have any form, login, or auto-filled content. These random Touch ID requests in Safari browsers sometimes pop up repeatedly, confusing and even worrying.

If you have this problem and want to know why and how to fix it, keep reading and you will have a better understanding of why a request like "Login with Touch ID" appears.

Why does the Mac's Touch Bar show "Login with Touch ID" or "AutoFill with Touch ID" in Safari?

The most likely reason why the Mac Touch Bar displays a Touch ID request when using Safari is that another Safari tab or browser window is trying to authenticate using stored credentials in the iCloud keychain— even if the web page or website is not the most active tab or browser window at the moment . The latter part is important because if you are used to opening many different browser windows and tabs at the same time, you are more likely to encounter this problem and appear to be random Touchbar authentication requests.

This can happen when the web page reloads, the website crashes and reloads, the browser session expires on a previously logged in page, or the website automatically logs you out and then requests login again, or another browser tab or browser window simply requests a saved password, login details, address information, email address or other information that needs to be automatically filled.

How to handle random "Login with Touch ID" requests in Safari?

What should I do if you see this request? It depends on yourself.

If you already know a website that attempts to authenticate or auto-filled, you can choose to authenticate with Touch ID.

I personally always choose Cancel on the far left side of the touch bar because every time I encounter this problem, it's hard for me to find which specific browser tab or window is requesting authentication, and I personally never want to log in, auto-filling, or authenticate to something without explicit intent.

Note that when using Safari to open multiple browser tabs or windows simultaneously, this auto-filling and Touch ID authentication behavior is normal and expected if any of these tabs or windows require authentication. However, this is indeed a bit awkward and confusing, and it would be much better if the third option is available on the touch bar when you see these Touch ID authentication requests to switch to that specific tab before filling in and authenticating with iCloud keychain information.

Remember that Apple has stopped using the touch bar on Mac, so it is unlikely that we will see any significant changes in the behavior or functionality of the touch bar that may make up for this issue or prevent it from happening.

Have you encountered this problem? Do you have a different approach to it on your Mac? Please share your experiences and thoughts in the comments.
